The Slide into Forever

by WildWithWords

Reclining calmly across his bed
Unusual time of day
His wounded body urges sleep
As energy drains away.

His fast lane life of passion
So carefree bright and breezy
A sculptured body since struck down
A mind left now uneasy.

Friends and family turned their backs
Their closeted minds can't see
Through the mattress…. across the floor
A spreading crimson sea.

No attempt at understanding
No aid from them he'd gained
In seeking strength from family
He rekindled only pain.

Criss-crossed rafters overhead
Reflected in a thought
Those sturdy beams convey a strength
A strength of mind he'd sought.

His pallid skin grows paler
Yet a calm behind that smile
The gush becomes a trickle
Sad traveler's final mile.

The loneliest moment lingers
Soft eyes savoring the light
For the slide into forever
Brings on the longest night.
