Across The Drift: a poem read to the sounds of Flybyno, piano by Maxence Grimbert-Barré

The sound of a beating heart cascaded through the infinite valleys of the dark

Twinkling lights guided its echoes, singing a chorus that could only be heard by angels

Digital in form, organic in emotion, the calculating mind wondered why its heart beats, why the chorus of stars sang its song

Eyes awaken to the beauty of time, its possibilities, the path yet unexplored

The coldness of the dark challenges, the isolation of the drift suffocates

Digital is the body, organic the spirit, the calculating mind pondered how it could feel the cold, experience the isolation, yet know beauty when it saw it

Across the drift, it found the answer

tstarr8481: The piano gave your poem an unexpectedly rich quality and did set the ambiance to a greater depth of emotion. Perhaps you would like to talk about the art of writing as would certainly be interested in hearing your thoughts..........

Rukellian: The art of writing... I'm not sure how to go about starting such a topic of conversation. Your thoughts on this tstarr?

tstarr8481: Hello Ruk....Let's start with how you begin your stories. We will build on it from there....I usually get thoughts about something I feel needs to be told and along the way I keep a journal with different ppl I have met including their mannerisms and character traits. I usually take parts of these profiles and make up different "players" to cast in one of the stories......just depends. I have found that everyone gets their ideas from different sources.........have always found the weaving to be most rewarding.......such as you have displayed here......

Rukellian: Indeed, there is no set algorithm or method when it comes to the art of writing, rarely can you apply the logic to the abstract and expect a coherent response, an answer one can be satisfied with. And yet... that is what people do when they write. One would expect some level of preplanning when going into a writing project, but for some, emotion and 'feeling' are the tools used. Abstract.

When I get behind the keyboard and I put on some music, I write because something has been stuck in my head for a while. It could have been sudden, like a flash of inspiration while pondering another problem, or it could be something nonsensical, but stubbornly persistent. When those times come, I try to answer them.

Regrettably, most of my story writing takes place in my head, long before it ever reaches a physical medium or digital one as it were... if it ever does.

To be honest, there is no consistent rhyme or reason behind my spurts of writing, excluding the sudden idea or the stubborn one that won't go away. When I DO write, it is usually paired with music, as mentioned above. Music, mostly lyricless compositions, help guide me into a proper mental state, a creative mindset that lets me pretend to be something I'm not. My characters are versions of me that could have been, might have been, but may never be. And as the saying goes, 'write about what you know', and who would know me better than myself, what I am capable of, could be capable of...

I breathe life into characters that are not reflections of myself through past references. My introverted nature lends itself to a strong set of observational skills. I have a good read on how people act because I listen and watch, I don't interrupt. My imagination helps fill in the blanks as they come. I also have watched my fair share of smart story writing when it comes to movies and television shows. Books keep me thoroughly entertained, and I find that a good author will always display a new way of presenting a character, a scenario, a conversation that someone else has already done.

I hope this served as a good start to the conversation.
