Hot Topic: Gun Control

In recent years, there has been a ideological war on whether or not guns should be more strictly enforced. While a lot of individuals blame guns as a huge advocate of violence and crime throughout the nation, statistics are beginning to show us that the claims they are presenting as individuals as non-factual, and lack empirical evidence.

The fact is that several studies have come out in recent years that proves against these claims, providing more accurate information towards guns and their involvement in crimes have come out by credible institutions, such as Harvard, Cato Institute, Washington Times, and the University of Chicago.

One such study shows that the crimes present in locations that prohibit the concealment of guns vs. locations that allow the concealment of guns.

"In Canada around 1920, before there was any form of gun control, their homicide rate was 7% of the U.S rate. By 1986, and after significant gun control legislation, Canada’s homicide rate was 35% of the U.S. rate – a significant increase. 10 In 2003, Canada had a violent crime rate more than double that of the U.S. (963 vs. 475 per 100,000)." Juristat: Crime Statistics in Canada, 2004 and FBI Uniform Crime Statistics online.

This is just one instance of a study done, using Canadian regulations as the subject. This is a huge increase, and noticeably, gun control laws had adversely effected the homicide rates within Canada, due to their reguations. While these statistics are not correspondent with the increase of other regulations, or other forms of homicidal activities, it does represent the effects of negative subjugation by increased regulations.

While individual lobbyist groups, and anti-gun groups have tried to blame guns and gun owners as a contributor to crime rates in our countries, as well as several other countries, the fact is, that no matter where you are at, and what type of weapon was used to commit a crime, crime is going to exist. However, there are studies done to show that states with more lenient gun laws have less gun-related homicide per capita then states with higher gun restrictions.

And for those that wish to own a gun, no matter where that individual is at, there are several ways that each state, and the federal government, helps to train and teach individuals. There are gun safety courses, background checks, annual re-education courses, and several other institutions of training to make an individual more intelligent about the use and ownership of a firearm.

So, before you blame the tool used in homicides, look at the people committing the crime.
