MobiusTruth: The electoral college is how the *States* elect the leader of the executive branch of the Federal government. it has to do with our being a republic (a representative democracy) rather than a pure democracy. The former has long been known to encourage compromise. The latter has long been known to be more vulnerable to factions and discord. The "Federalist Papers" are an interesting read.
