Interesting Video About The Key to Happiness, If There Is One

I struggle a lot with how to be happy. But if there's one thing I believe -- and this runs counter to the message our popular culture sends you 24 hours a day, so I am very much in the minority in holding this view -- it's that deep happiness comes not from pursuing it directly, but as a byproduct of pursuing meaningful goals that are rooted in values that mean something to you.
This video is about a researcher of ALS -- the disease that Stephen Hawking had -- who gets ALS himself. If you can watch it without tears, you're a better person than me.
Note that his happiness comes from certain deep-rooted values: family, and the fact that his work gives him meaning because the search for a cure may help others. With a year to live, and the physical limitations he is under, he doesn't have the luxury of doing whatever makes him happy on a momentary basis. His happiness is a byproduct of pursuing meaningful goals.

Unlike the message society sends you, which is to do whatever makes you happy, I have learned happiness for me only comes from pursuing meaningful goals: to become a teacher who helps others, to better live out my faith in God, to constantly try to improve myself, to make the space I am in a little better place. Making happiness dependent on just doing what makes you feel good for a few minutes is cheap fuel. It burns quickly and is gone, leaving a feeling of dissatisfaction. Seeing happiness as a byproduct of pursuing meaningful goals which come out of your deepest values is long-lasting fuel.
