lewqui1: In the spirit of "Girl With the Pearl Earring"...might this masterpiece be "Girl With the Flower"...I think so.

zen_andtheart: This is Ophelia the moment before her saturated garments cause her to drown; she had became deeply disturbed by her father the King's death, and by Hamlet's spurning of her love, and didn't have the presence of mind to even save herself. She was quite mad.

Lady_Wood in reply to zen_andtheart: How did I miss this gem of a comment last night? I always found this scene pretty profound in Hamlet. First of all, she slipped into madness after Hamlet, the man she loves, MURDERS her father during a case of mistaken identity. He also does spurn her, but that's because he himself is already a bit mad. There's plenty of insanity to go around in this play. Anyways, what I like about Ophelia's tragedy is that she is simply picking flowers when she falls in the river, but she is so far removed from life already that she cannot save herself from her demise. It's such an innocent act that leads to her untimely departure. She sings to herself as slowly gets weighed down and drowns, unaware of her own fate. If that doesn't seem like a metaphor for life, I don't know what does.
