The Care and Feeding of the Witch's Broom

THE CARE AND FEEDING OF THE WICCA BROOM

As Witches, we need to be aware of the Ancient Broom Lore that has been passed down to us from those wonderful Crones of the past.

1- Never leave home for long periods of time without telling your broom.
...
2- Treat your broom as you would any other member of your family, with honor, reverence and respect.

3- Magickal Brooms are not regular cleaning brooms and should not be used for such mundane tasks.

4- Never leave your Magickal Broom outside your cast circle.

5- Speak with your broom as you would speak to other members of your family or coven.

6- Never leave your Magickal Broom outside in the weather unless you ask the Broom.

7- Oil your broomstick with every turn of the wheel.

Brooms have long been known for their magickal ways, probably due to it's shape, use in purification rites and kinship with magickal wands and staffs. The common household tool has been known to be so sacred that in many parts of the world there are Broom Deities.

Sao Ching Niang - The lady with the broom who lives in the Broom Star. When there is too much rain and the crops are threatened, it is not uncommon in China to see pictures of Brooms hanging on the front door or fences to bring clear and sunny weather to the field.

As this is invoking the Great Earth Goddess herself, the Broom Star is the fertile womb of our Great Goddess, and thus she gives us life of the fields that are represented by the Corn Fields. Hence the broom is brought into our homes from the womb of the Goddess.

In Mexico, the Witch Goddess Tlazoiteotl is depicted riding on a broom. This symbolizes the coming of the night, the dark part of ourselves, the growing
darkness of the winter.

The priests in South America hve been known to burn offerings of owls and snakes. These were offered at the dark moon. Through these offerings, the people were calling upon the Broom Witch to sweep away their transgressions.

My grandmother was a Broom Witch. Here are some of the old magickal things that can be done with a broom. On a hot summers day, I would watch her go out on the
front porch and swing the broom over her head. Grandma would just tell me to be quiet, the rain was coming. And if fact she was right. A few hours later we
always had rain. So Granny would call the rain with her broom by swinging it clockwise over her head.

In turn, if it was raining too much, she would go out and talk with her broom for a while on the front porch. She would sing: "Rain, rain, go away, come again
some other day". Then she would raise her broom and swing it over her head counter-clockwise to stop the rain, and again, a few hours later the rain would stop.

With some practice, I know have mastered this little broomlore spell. I find it handy to tell the broom what I want it to do before I do it, then I say my incantation and swing the broom.

THE CARE AND FEEDING OF A MAGICKAL BROOM

When you first get your broom, always greet it by rubbing your hand over the entire staff of the broom. Learn the body of your broom, inspect it's divets and
curves. Use anointing oil to open and activate your broom. A good oil is made from rosemary, thyme, myrrh and lavender in base oil. Make this oil by the full moon and then open your broom on the first day of the new moon.

When getting a new broom, it's always good to talk with it awhile. I usually carry mine along with me in my car, and I sleep with it by my bed. Talk with your broom, it's amazing how much these magickal tools have to say to us and how lonely they become when cast to the side. When shopping for a new broom, always put out your intention on the day after the new moon, burn pink and white candles, and ask for the right broom to be shown to you. My preference is a broom made with natural corn, or harvested brambles. I like to find a natural
handle for the broom. Elm, birch, ash, oak, sassafras, those are all really good magickal woods to use as broom handles. If you are lucky to live in a natural area, you can make your own from the Divine Goddess Garden. If you are a city dweller, local shops sometimes carry natural brooms that are hand-tied.
Usually they are found at local gift shops or craft fairs. Also go to the local Antique mall. Sometimes you'll find an interesting retired broom that would like to be put back into service. Nothing is worse then to have a wise old broom and not have it in use.

After your broom has been chosen and spoken to, then start using it to call in your circle. I point the broom in the direction that I'm casting and use this to focalize the energy.

Once the circle is cast, then I lay the broom across the east to guard the entrance until my magickal work is done. I also sprinkle salt in the east over the broom to strengthen the seal, especially if I find myself doing some intense spell casting.

Once I'm done with casting my magickal work, I thank my broom and lift it from east and dismiss the quarters. A broom can also be used to cast a circle in a hurry, much the same way a staff can be used. If I know I need immediate protection, I point my broom to east and cast a circle with my broom pointed to the earth, moving in a clockwise direction. This really works if you are in a hurry and need to have some sacred space like NOW.

I also oil my broom handle with my anointing oil 4 times a year during each turn of the wheel. This helps recharge the broom and helps you reconnect with it. It likes to be stroked and caressed. Your broom is a sensuous creature and like to be part of the Divine Feminine.

BROOM SPELLS

The "Come to Me" Broom Spell
On a warm night (or turn the heater up), put on some Goddess clothing (loose and feminine), put on some soothing music that makes you want to dance. Now take
your broom as if it were your beloved and dance with the broom until you are flying into the arms of your beloved. Whisper this four times to yourself....

By night's light we shine bright
By sun light we are right
By days end we are together by sacred rite.

Now cast your circle by laying your broom in each quarter. Lay the broom in the east and jump clockwise over it. Lay the broom in the south and jump clockwise
over it. Lay the broom in the west and jump clockwise over it. Then lay it in the north and jump over it. Once you have completed your circle, your beloved will come to you within 24 hours. Use this spell to mend fights, or if you don't have a mate, use this to call a mate to you.

SWEEPING SPELLS AND LORE

If you feel your life is in chaos, take a look around at your front porch and front walkway. If the front walk is cluttered with leaves and dirt, then sweep your walkway and front porch clean with your magickal broom and envision that your life is in order and that all that comes to your will be clean and cleared.

When you move from one house to another, it's always good to change your workaday broom. Either burn your old one, or make sure that it is buried with honor. Always bring a new broom into the new house, but sweep some dirt from the outside in before you sweep the dirt from the inside out. This is to bring in good luck from the beginning and not push your luck out the door.

Always hang a broom by the front door for protection. Brooms will keep the bad things out and the good things in. I have a broom at every door of my home. I keep it in the corner. Always stand a broom on end with the brush facing up. This helps the wear and tear on the brush and it's also said to bring love from the earth through the broomstick and given up to the heavens through the brush.

If your broom falls from your hand while you are sweeping or doing other work, make a wish before you pick it up. It's also said that if a broom falls from it's kept place, company is coming and it's not good news. When you pick up your broom after something like this happens, sweep the energy out the door and bid it adue not to return again.

If you or your kin are having recurrent nightmares or night hauntings, sweep the room clockwise while stating that all that lies between here and the other world be gone and back whence you came.
Hither, hither, hither gone.
Hither, hither, hither gone
Hither, hither, thither gone
So Mote It Be.

Now stand the broom outside the bedroom door and place a piece of garlic under the bed.

HANDFASTING AND MARRIAGE BROOM LORE

As a Priestess and Wiccan Minister, I perform several Handfasting Rites per year. One of the main things I encourage Wiccan engaged couples to do is to find
a broom together. This is the symbol of hearth and home. Once the broom has been found, then it is anointed as I stated above, then some of the broom brush is pulled from the stem. That brush is then woven together and placed upon the wedding altar. The broom is present during our counseling sessions and then the
wife-to-be is usually the keeper of the broom until the wedding. This represents that she is the keeper of the home and keeps peace and harmony while the man
goes out to work. It also means that she is the keeper of the Magickal power of the home. As it seems in these modern times that this is wrong to have such sexed roles, this is celtic lore from more than 600 years ago.

The night before the wedding, the couple will dress the broom by weaving 3 strand of colored ribbon around the handle. What this represents is the inter-twining of their lives and they themselves are no longer individuals but are part of each other. The broom is then placed either standing by the altar or placed lying under the altar during the ceremony as the vows are said, the promises made, that hands fasted. They are pronounced husband and wife and the broom is then put before them as the final test of love. The couple either steps, or in old tradition, jumps, over the broom. This is the final end of the ceremony. Then it is recommended that the couple takes the broom home and makes love with the broom under the bed. This seals the marriage.

Your broom can be your best friend and your magickal ally. Treat your broom with honor, reverence and respect and you will have a life-long companion and ritual tool.

Blessed be )O(

A Letter From Mom and Dad

~ A Letter From MOM And DAD ~

Dear Children (and believe us, that's all of you), We consider ourselves pretty patient folks. For instance, look at the Grand Canyon. It took millions of years to get it right. And about evolution? Boy, nothing is slower than designing that whole Darwinian thing to take place, cell by cell, and gene by gene.

We've been patient through your fashions, civilizations, wars and schemes, and the countless ways you take Us for granted until you get yourselves into big trouble again and again.

We want to let you know about some of the things that are starting to tick Us off.

First of all, your religious rivalries are driving Us up a wall. Enough already! Let's get one thing straight: These are YOUR religions, not Ours. We're the whole enchilada; We're beyond them all. Every one of your religions claims there is only one of Us (which by the way, is absolutely true). But in the very next breath, each religion claims it's Our favorite one.

And each claims it's scriptures were written personally by Us, and that all the other scriptures are man-made. Oy Vey. How do We even begin to put a stop to such complicated nonsense?

Okay, listen up now. We're your Father AND Mother, and We don't play favorites among Our children.

Also, We hate to break it to you, but We don't write. Our longhand is awful, and We've always been more of "doers" anyway. So ALL of your books, including those Bibles, were written by men and women. They were inspired, remarkable people, but they also made mistakes here and there. We made sure of that so that you would never trust a written word more than your own living heart.

You see, one human being to Us, even a bum on the street, is worth more than all the Holy Books in the world. That's just the kind of folks we are.

Our spirit is not a historical thing. It's alive right here, right now, as fresh as your next breath.

Holy books and religious rites are sacred and powerful, but not more so than the least of you. They were only meant to steer you in the right direction, not to keep you arguing with each other, and certainly not to keep you from trusting your own personal connection with Us.

Which brings Us to Our next point about your nonsense. You act like We need you and your religions to stick up for Us or "win souls" for Our sake. Please, don't do Us any favors. We can stand quite well on our own, thank you. We don't need you to defend Us, and We don't need constant credit. We just want you to be good to each other.

And another thing, We don't get all worked up over money or politics, so stop dragging Our names into your dramas. For example, We swear to Us smile::::, that We never threatened Oral Roberts. We never rode in any of Rajneesh's Rolls Royces. We never told Pat Robertson to run for president, and We've never, EVER had a conversation with Jim Baker, Jerry Falwell, or Jimmy Swaggart! Of course, come Judgment Day, We certainly intend to....

The thing is, We want you to stop thinking of religion as some sort of loyalty pledge to Us.

The true purpose of your religions is so that YOU can become more aware of Us, not the other way around. Believe Us, We know you already. We know what's in each of your hearts, and We love you with no strings attached.

Lighten up and enjoy Us. That's what religion is best for. What you seem to forget is how mysterious We are.

You look at the petty differences in your Scriptures and say, "Well, if THIS is the truth, then THAT can't be!" But instead of trying to figure out Our Paradoxes and Unfathomable Nature, which by the way, you NEVER will, why not open your hearts to the simple common threads in all religions.

You know what We're talking about. Love and respect everyone. Be kind, even when life is scary or confusing. Take courage and be of good cheer, for We are always with you. Learn how to be quiet, so you can hear Our still, small voice. (We don't like to shout).

Leave the world a better place by living your life with dignity and gracefulness, for you are Our Own Children. Hold back nothing from life, for the parts of you that can die surely will, and the parts that can't, won't. So don't worry, be happy. (We stole that last line from Bobby McFerrin.)

Simple stuff. Why do you keep making it so complicated? It's like you're always looking for an excuse to be upset. And We're very tired of being your main excuse. Do you think We care whether you call Us.... Yahweh, Jehovah, Allah, Diana, Wakantonka, Brahma, Cerridwen, Father, Mother, God, Goddess or even the Void of Nirvana? Do you think We care which of Our special children you feel closest to, Jesus, Mary, Buddha, Krishna, Gerald, Mohammed or any of the others? You can call Us and Our Special Ones any name you choose, if only you would go about Our business of loving one another as We love you. How can you keep neglecting something so simple?

We're not telling you to abandon your religions. Enjoy your religions, honor them, learn from them, just as you should enjoy, honor, and learn from your parents.

But do you walk around telling everyone that your parents are better than theirs? Your religion, like your parents, may always have the most special place in your hearts, We don't mind that at all. And We don't want you to combine all the Great Traditions in One Big Mess. Each religion is unique for a reason. Each has a unique style so that people can find the best path for themselves.

Know that Our Special Children, the ones that your religions revolve around, all live in the same place, (Our heart), and they get along perfectly, We assure you.

The clergy must stop creating a myth of sibling rivalry where there is none. Our blessed children of Earth, the world has grown too small for you pervasive religious bigotries and confusion. The whole planet is connected by air travel, satellite dishes, telephones, fax machines, rock concerts, diseases, and mutual needs and concerns.

Get with the program! If you really want to help, then commit yourselves to figuring out how to feed your hungry, clothe your naked, protect your abused, and shelter your poor. And just as importantly, make your own everyday life a shining example of kindness and good humor. We've given you all the resources you need, if only you abandon your fear of each other and begin living, loving and laughing together.

We're not really ticked off. We just wanted to grab your attention because We hate to see you suffer. But We have given you free will to choose your own paths, and We just want you to be happy.

In Perfect Love and Perfect Trust,
With all our love Mom and Dad

Hawthorne & Beltane

Merry meet, and welcome to another of my blogs for the Pagan Blog Project. I am so excited about this one and am actually writing it underneath my Hawthorne tree. *Kandy giggles* and I have a fire burning near by.

My blog today will be on the Hawthorn tree, and it works for me because it's so close to Beltane. When I did my research on magical trees for my wand crafting I found that Hawthorn had the proprieties I wanted in a wand. It's strong with the Fae, very protective, is good for any kind of magic drawing things towards you, and is a fire tree,or rather an elemental fire, and that it does burn extremely hot, but I also found that the berries are good for anyone with high blood pressure, or weak hearts. You can make tea with them,, which I now do. It's really good for energy to give you a little boost. I thought they where just good tasting (a little sour) they sure quench your thirst on a hot day. The berries dont ripen until August or so, but this month, for sure by May we will have blossoms!

Traditionally during Beltane the May pole will have Hawthorn flowers placed on top, and fair maidens will braid the flowers in there hair, Representing purity, growth, and renewal. The flowers first blooms are a symbol of the days being longer, and
ready for fertilization, berries will follow. With the colors of the may pole being wound around the representing the cycle of life or spiral, renewal, and birth the pole it's self being a phallic symbol of the God and his readiness, and colors and the flowers on top of the pole being a symbol of the Goddess's purity and readiness for birth. Fire is an extremely passionate element, Hawthorn burns the hottest.

Beltane being a fire festival it is no wonder they would want the hottest burning wood. With this holiday being so sexual in nature it is probably one of the worst for us witch's in that the reputation being us "dancing naked" and fornicating, giving us a bad rep. sort of a shame really because if they took they took the time to study the Sabbat they maybe would understand that being naked & dancing for some of us is just an excellent way to raise energy. *blushing yes I am speaking from experience on this one, and as for the fornicating, that is for the God & Goddess. Mine is behind closed doors & private.

A Morning Stroll With The Lady

I went for a walk this morning,, I had this overwhelming urge to go outside and just think, reflect, take pictures, and cleanse my stones in the crick that we have out back. It's cold, but wow was it amazing this morning, I brought with me also my familer, and a bag for collecting pine needles, or anything else that I would wonder upon.

This is for me today, I have been learning so much, and there is still so much to learn. I've been using the resource's that are available to me, and working with what I have. I have met some wonderful women, generous of heart and knowledge. I follow them only to learn, and what Im learning is of love. I have found that my feelings are valid, and I do not have to explain them to anyone. I have learned that my feelings are useful tools to channel energy and strength from, and I have found a new sense of confidence.

Im not a rich person, we live on a shoestring budget, there are times I would wish for more, more stuff money for worshiping?? What a bizarre concept when I think about that. When today I know that just by going outside I am worshiping.

I cant help but reflecting a little about the past, how Im changed now. I was a selfish. ungrateful drunk, that did not appropriate the beauty of life, I took it for granted, and welcomed death, in fact hoped for it. Today I feel the love of life, I do not fear death, I dont think Im ever going to be accepting of loosing anyone I love, but today I love life. Today I am in a place that I am grateful for all the little things.

I've learned in my Wiccan path, that nature is my best friend, and she is wonderful and amazing, today Im grateful for even the snow. I think now more then ever, Im happy, really really happy. I have found friends that accept me the way I am, and some that even come to me with questions. I listen carefully now to the sounds of life the birds singing for spring coming, my dogs eyes when they speak to me. I also listen now more the words of the people who come into my life, and I know that they are there for a reason, that there are no coincidence's.

Im in the process of making my own wand, Im really excited about that, and it was from things that I already had available when it's done I will post it. Im using Hawthorne because of it's protective proprieties. We have a lot of tree's right in the back yard. Im also working on my torot training, and actually getting pretty good. Im more familer with the cards and there meanings, even for me which is hard task, to remain, outside of ones self. Im also learning more about the Gods and Goddess,, Im still stuck, well not stuck, but drawn towards Artemis, Im not sure yet why, but I am sure I will find out.

I needed that little bit of time to reflect on what is important to me. What my real needs are and not wants. I discovered that I really dont have any needs They are met in everyway. Im grateful to be loved by a man who loves me just the way I am,, and Im silly goofy, some what of a clutz,, I cant sing to save my life but do it anyway,, and I love dancing. I also have inappropriate laughter, and find things funny that maybe are not. I have laughter, and to me that's important, appropriate or not. Im not hungry homeless or unloved, and at one time I was all of that. So today Im grateful. My life is far from perfect, I have bills, car insurance that comes before books I want, or candles I want, or flowers that I want But with that in mind I have my needs being met, and I am happy. So with that all being said, and no real reason for this blog except that it is for me. Im going to go back to my studies. I will leave a fun picture that I took on my spiritual walk this morning.. I't just to cute to leave out.

After lessons, I think I might try something new. I've been wanting to learn how to do caramel apples because I love them, but I want to add cinnamon to them just for love, and to be different. Blessed Be with Love and Light Lady Kane )0(

To Coven or not to Coven?

Welcome, & Merry Meet, Im doing my blog today for the Pagan Blog Project and am grateful to be part of it. This week we are on C again, and am glad for that also, as this time I did not need to do to much research for the text of my blog.

We recently celebrated Imbolic, and I personally have been trying to get in touch with a local coven that I have heard so many good and positive things about. So it begins like this...

I was first introduced to Laurel-Grove-Wiccan-Circle by word of mouth first by a friend, who is part of a paranormal group, then by my daughter. I've always been the one to believe that if it keeps coming back to you, or that if it is a continued thought that there is a reason, so I began to take a closer look at what would be involved in this coven. Imbolic came and I was sent an invitation to attend. Yay a perfect opportunity to get to know the group. Totally thrilled and not knowing a thing, except for a few names, and what to wear,, Yes we had cloths on, but to be honest that was one of my concerns, it's my understanding that some covens are skyclad, another policy of mine is if you dont know ask. lol.

I was pleasantly surprised by the group of people I met, and was immediately treated like family. I was greeted with warm hello's Merry Meet's and Blessed Be's, and was put to work almost as fast. I loved it! I also asked a lot of questions. I suppose anyone would. The first one was is there a formal ritual or initiation into the coven, and the answer was no, that some do that, and it's a matter of preference between coven families. There purpose is to be part of the community as witch's offering what ever is needed to help other witch's or the community as a whole. For the most part we only gather for holidays, But have started doing other things inside the communities to teach not only other witch's about witch stuff,, but also to teach people about us, that we are not to be feared. We are in the process of doing what is called workshops where for a very small cost you can learn how to make your own runes, or jewelry with magic intent. All of which you keep when the the workshop is done. They also offer at no cost for Gardnerians wicca training. It was Gerald Gardner who made it his policy to never charge for education, or spiritual improvement. He also firmly place "with harm to none" in his conduct of teaching. At that the discover of nature and all her mysteries should be a shared practice. So basically in my experience, it's totally to coven. I found my experience to be more of an outdoor church, that would be the actual ritual, which was conducted with all manners and behaviors that you would have in a church, such as dont leave the circle, or do not speak unless you are invited to. After the ritual was when the real fun began, for myself It felt similar to a fellowshipping just like you would have after a church service, only way more fun. We ate cakes that where prepared for the ritual, and for those of us who dont drink where offered herbal tea's, or punch for ale. It was a really great experience and one that I intend to continue, as the friendships there can become very special. To me coven means family and friends. This is just my experience if you have a chance to find your own,, I reccemend it, but would also suggest asking questions, and learning what you can about what ever coven you choose before becoming involved.

Core Feelings

Week 5 of the pagan blog project
Welcome, what Im about to address is something more on the spiritual level of witch crafting., and something that I think anyone should do, witch or not.

When I was in recovery, (there where several) the final recovery, the one that took. (kind of, as I relapsed again, only to remember there lessons) One of the things that I really found helpful was the use of affirmations, positive thinking, and getting to know your core feelings. At the time I remember thinking to my self, as this was a Christian organization that they where in fact doing magic, in a sense of changing perspectives...

One of the first things they teach you in recovery is that if you repeat the same behavior expect the same results. You need to change everything about you, people you hang with, place's you go, and things that you do. When I finally made the decision to become sober, I did just that. Including my hair color,, lol,, I do not think they ment that, but hey, it's me

I already covered affirmations, they work for me,, and the moto is "work it" At the home I was at we stayed there for 9 months, with 25 other women all in recovery of one form or another, it was a enlightening experience, to say the least. When we "worked" our 4th 5th and 6th step all very important,, and for me incredibly difficult, they taught us "core feeling" Okay so now your saying Kane get to the point,,, Core feelings are deeper then just a quick scan of "how you feeling today?" We where taught to get in touch with what we feel when... we made lists,, This is an example.

List work
1 List of concerns/confrontations
2 Appreciations /gratitude
3 Goals
4 Personal Boundaries

At first glance you would think okay so what,, but let me tell you,, and any good alcoholic can tell you that, that list is a joke. Really,, we do not do confrontations, and personal boundaries do not exist , we hide, or run or concerns are simple next hit, or next bottle,, so you see the pattern I wont go any further with that ...

Next is a little more difficult
1. When you (actual behavior)
2. Like the time you (specific behavior)
3. I feel (3 or more core feelings)

Core feelings
Happy, hopeful, lonely, hurt, sad, peaceful, grateful, guilty, proud, shame, relieved, loved, angry. Basic like the basic colors,, really. In fact for me I associated colors with each feeling. It worked for me.

Now if you make those list,,, and or fill out the behaviors, you will see how it helps.. and what your core feelings are, how to know what you are really feeling,, and how you can change them. In changing your core feelings your are leaving room open for more positive behaviors, and more productive magic..

Example I'll use my husband (poor guy, I always pick on him)
When you clean the house at 7:30am,, like you do everyday, I feel guilty, shamed and angry.
Or
When you clean the house at 7:30am like you do every morning, I feel grateful, proud, and loved.

Do you see how changing your core feelings can change your perspective,, allowing for love.
Another one I can use is when I was in my drinking days,, and at the time I did not notice of course. I love my bestie,, she been with me through it all,, and loved me the whole time..

Example Lisa my bestie
When you pick on me about drinking, like the time I got drunk and knocked over your bird cage. I feel angry, shamed, and resentful. This one is hard because really I was drunk, and I was trying to help, but in fact made more work and could have hurt her bird. But she recognized that, and in fact was concerned for me.. so If I turn it around and say
When you show concern for my drinking, like when I knocked over your bird cage, it makes me feel loved, sad, that I let you down, and relieved that we are still friends

So in the end getting to know your core feelings, and realizing them,, leaves room for the more positive behaviors, and feelings,, which of course helps to know yourself better,, and gets you closer spiritually to the Mother, and Father. Releasing these feelings is just invigorating, and rewarding.

Let loose of what you can not control and serenity will be yours~
