milaz0id: Minecraft dude. Watch some YouTubes. It’s nearly whatever you want it to be if you’re willing to figure out how your tools are work.

Hans Dunckel: Suppose Darkwood fits that description, dunno a lot of zombie free roam games.
Some good games I can recommend: Kingdom Come Deliverance, Assassin's Creed Origins, The Witcher, Age of Empires 1 (or 2) Definitive Edition... all of them have more or less non-linear open world maps and you can broadly customize your playstyle, though they are more story focused than pure sandbox except the last one which is a real time strategy game

milaz0id: I should also add minecraft has zombies but they’re cute and only a little bit gross. That game is so innocent and makes people think and learn and be creative I think.

Do it.
Can either make a server or join a random one to play.
Keep in mind: if you make your own server, then it will run off your computer’s power and memory banks.

Sphered_Root: I will list for you some games which I have tried. I will also give you a bit of information on each. Bear in mind though that I have lost my interest in gaming for the most part. I still check things out and see if I like them. But few games that that "hook" quality for me anymore.

If you are looking for free roam survival I can suggest the following:

Fallout: New Vegas + all DLCs:

You have most likely already played this game but its worth listing. Its an older game and probably the best fallout after 2. Finding a few mods for it may be advisable as the items and difficulty of the game world seems unfinished. However it does have crafting, fighting and exploring elements. The game has a lot of limitations though, small world size being one of them. Other issues are a simplistic fighting system, and a poor stealth system. Using the games menus to move items around is a pain as well.

Subnautica:

Not a bad game, however it is only one step up from being a walking simulator. Its fun for exploring and building, but not much challenge beyond that. The crafting is okay but limited, it has a almost non existent combat system.

7 Days to die:

If you dont like minecraft you probably wont like this game. Its okay in multiplayer but it feels like they are shifting the focus to base building. The combat is okay, your zombie enemies are pathetic looking and week. There are a few animal enemies and about 20 zombie types. The graphics for the zombies looks dated and sad. The crafting system is kinda fun, but will get old fast. I would play it with people if you were going to get it.

Escape the Pacific:

Extremely realistic game, but no real combat. Its still in development and playing it when trapped on an Island is fun. The amazing thing about this one is the level of detail to realism. Great if you want to just chill out. No threats to your existence in the form of adversaries will make you get board fast though.

No Mans Sky:

A diverse walking simulator. Your main enemy in this game is inventory management. The game has a lot to offer if you like fetch quests and grinding for little chunks of minerals or walking around staring at things. Being able to defeat almost any foe with your starter craft gives you an indication as to how combat works in this game. They have improved it quite a bit but that is still the main game.

Ark Survival Evolved:

Not a bad game. Its a good combination of things. Combat is not bad, the grind is manageable, and being able to do a lot of things that this game has to offer is fun. Crafting is well done to a point. Also who does not want to ride around on a dino while holding guns? Some of the downsides of the game are the dino taming system. Essentially you just punch a dino straight in the face or knock it out with sleeping pills. After that you force it to stay asleep and you shove food into its mouth until it likes you based on a timer. Really disappointing. The breeding system is fun but a grind. Also if you are on any server with lots of people, unless you join a team that is already established, you will get owned. Someone will always have some super breed dino they made to just stomp your base and nothing you can make will compete unless you spend months grinding and breeding. Otherwise fun game.

Rust:

You like spammers? You like trolls? You like getting spawned into the wild naked with nothing while teams of other players chase you around with shotguns? You like crybaby 10 year olds bowing up your voice chat? You like people spamming swear words at everyone and you? You like to join teams where everyone is always back stabbing and fighting even if your team is on top? Enjoy Pay to Win? If you said yes get this game. Dont get mad when the Russian and Chinese hackers ruin your server though.

The Forest:

One of the better ones in my opinion. Its like a combination of Escape the Pacific with proper enemies and Subnautica on an island. It has a lot of underground caves to explore and mutant zombie-like tribal freaks who try to kills you. There is a lot of combat in this game, and things what will want to smash your base and your face. Multiplayer is kinda weak though.

Green Hell:

Its pretty much the more realistic version of the Forest but with less to do but better graphics. Watch were you step though as one wrong step and its game over due to snake bite. Also I hope you enjoy moving and rotating every item you own to avoid mesh hit boxes so things will stack and sort in a container.

Empyrion - Galactic Survival:

A combination of Ark and No mans sky. The added quark to this game is building your own spaceship from blocks. No aerodynamics though. Just jam some junk together and call it a day. Not really that great and late game is boring.

Kenshi:

This one is also really good. I would recommend it. Lots of positives to this game. You can craft, build, mine, farm, just wonder around and do whatever. You can have a large team while you wonder the wastes in 3rd person. No multiplayer, but you can have a team of bots. Its a lot like a real time Fallout 2 with better combat, no guns though.
