Harlot OScara: "The idea prevalent in the minds of Christians that their faith is the one and only truly inspired doctrine, and that it came parentless into the world, is unreasonable in the extreme. A study of comparative religions proves beyond doubt that Christianity has begged, borrowed, or stolen its philosophies and concepts from the religions and philosophies of the ancient and medieval pagan worlds. Among the religious symbols and allegories which belonged to the world long ago before the coming of Christianity are a few to which we would like to call your attention. The following Christian symbols and concepts are of pagan origin. The Christian cross comes from Egypt and India the triple miter from the faith of the Mithraics the shepherd's crook from the Hermetic Mysteries and Greece the immaculate conception from India: the transfiguration from Persia: and the trinity from the Brahmans. The Virgin Mary, as the mother of God, is found in a dozen different faiths. There are over twenty crucified world saviors. The church steeple is an adaptation of Egyptian obelisks and pyramids, while the Christian devil is the Egyptian Typhon with certain modifications. The deeper one goes into the problem, the more he realizes that there is nothing new under the sun. A truly sincere study of the Christian faith proves beyond all doubt that it is the evolutionary outgrowth of primitive doctrines. There is an evolution in religion as well as in physical form. If we accept and incorporate into our doctrines the religious symbolism of nearly forty peoples it behooves us to understand (at least in part) the meaning of the myths and allegories which we borrow, lest we be more ignorant than those from whom we secured them."

cloudygrey33: Do you think it is possible that these recurring designs/ideas/symbols from various religions around the world are all so similar because perhaps "God" or the God story is somehow managing to retell itself to these different people/cultures in a very similar way throughout time? Whether that's connected to human psychology or a literal God working and weaving through history is another matter... But I just wonder if it the same themes/symbolism keeps showing up because world religions are stealing/borrowing from each other or if it might be something a little deeper at play? Like a connected theme that is because of some larger force at work... I wonder if we buried all the religion stories in an underground vault somewhere and we erased all human memory, if in a thousand years suddenly a new story about a virgin birth with a trinity and a cross and ideas about loving your neighbor etc would pop up... Would the same themes and symbols keep popping back up if we got rid of all them?

Harlot OScara in reply to cloudygrey33: To me, it's all the same, but using different words from different viewpoints. I started studying every religion I could find in my early 20's. It didnt take me long to figure out the light is the same, but the lamps are different. There is a reason why so many people resonate with all these stories.. it can't be coincidence. Everything in nature goes in circles and cycles, why would this be any different?

I was thinking today about how Clive Barker said "Magic is the first and last religion of the world". The first part of this cycle, is just faith without logic or reason, but I believe (if humanity doesn't end up killing everything before we get there) that humans will turn back to magick after science is fully understood, but this time it would be faith joined with reason.

To me, this is the purpose of alchemy.

lupedediablo: Humanity will indeed come full circle when the unconscious union with the divine essence of the universe experienced by"primitive" cultures becomes a fully concious one. after having transcended the artificial split between nature and spirit that has been imposed by monotheistic religions and conventional science. Magick is the grass that cracks through the concrete layers of our conditioning and has secretly informed the mystics of all spiritual traditions since neolithic times

cloudygrey33: Wow- That's really a cool way to say it- The light is the same but the lamps are different. I gravitate towards the Christ lamp, but I recognize the light in all of them for sure... I wish more people who identified with the Christ lamp weren't so fond of smashing their lamps on the heads of people who aren't holding the same lamp.

Super deep insight ! Gee. And exactly re: humanity not destroying everything first...
Also I really hope it doesn't work out in such a way that reason and science ultimately kills all the magic or faith that is left in the world... I could totally envision a future like that episode of the Twilight Zone- The Obsolete Man ...Where we live in a world of total absolutes and there is no room for anyone to deviate from the script or have individual faith or freedom of thought at all. Just as there is danger in a world of faith without logic or reason, I think there is also danger in a world of absolutes/logic/reason with no sense of "magic" or wonder left ... It is a balance isn't it? (That doesn't mean I'm anti-reason or science at all btw. I think I'm just anti-total certainty that alienates others who are less certain. Whatever the technical term for that is..)
