Charles441: Two controversial verses of the Olivet Discourse involve what has come to be identified as the final generation. However, in order to conclude that Jesus was referring to the people of a certain time period, one generally makes assumptions like the following: (1) the fig tree referenced in the Olivet Discourse (Mt 24:32) is 1948 Israel, and (2) the phrase “this generation” (Mt 23:36; 24:34) refers to people covering a restricted period of time. Both of these assumptions are false. Consider two negative points with the two associated key phrases from the two key verses:
Charles441: Most prophecy teachers claim varying dates for the beginning of this so-called final or terminal generation. In fact, the biblical length and meaning of this terminal generation serves as one of the most sought after and perplexing figures for these teachers. Yet, God never intended for this confusion to exist (1Co 14:33). In order to grasp the truth, the student and teacher need to first clear their minds of the preconceived theological clutter on this matter. In other words, forget what you have been taught to believe about this so-called final generation because it is most likely wrong!
Charles441: According to the Lord, the nation of Israel would not see Him again until they accepted Him on a national scale. The worldwide persecution in the End-Times will surely bring this proud and haughty nation to their knees. This humiliation of the nation of Israel will precede Christ’s return to deliver them and will, no doubt, prepare them for that
Charles441: It is important not to miss how the Lord sandwiched most of the Olivet Discourse and End-Times preaching between the two statements concerning this single generation and the “these things” mentioned. One chapter later, we read: “Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled” (Mt 24:34).
The remainder of Matthew chapter 23 (prior to the Olivet Discourse) identifies what piqued the interest and the questioning of the apostles concerning the End-Times.
Charles441: This pronouncement of judgment only makes complete sense when combined with Daniel’s End-Times prophecy against Israel. The purposes of Daniel’s Seventy Weeks include finishing the transgression, making an end of sins, and making reconciliation for iniquity (Da 9:24). This prophetic pronouncement indicates why the wicked over the millennia of time are held accountable for all innocent blood. In fact, these judgments in Matthew refer to a particular generation with the same wicked characteristics, not a generation alive during a certain point in time.
Charles441: That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
Charles441: The Lord further prophesied that Israel would kill, crucify, scourge, and persecute these sent ones. In response, God would hold them responsible for all the blood shed throughout the Old Testament’s recorded history starting with Abel and ending with Zechariah (recorded in the first book [Genesis] and last book of the Hebrew scriptures [Second Chronicles]).
Charles441: In the first 33 verses of Matthew chapter 23, the Lord harshly rebuked the hypocrisy and inordinate pride of Israel’s religious leadership. Their hypocrisy moved the Lord to send prophets, wise men, and scribes to them. The Lord stated:
Mt 23:34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
Charles441: As recorded in Matthew chapter 23, Jesus made some statements about the End-Times prior to ascending the Mount of Olives. These statements became the impetus behind what was asked in private concerning the End-Times. Those teachers who fail to take into account this interruption in thought and dialog have caused incalculable damage to End-Times doctrines. It is time to put the whole teaching into its proper perspective.
