"To him were ultimately destined the command of the elements, and powers of thought; the the fervor of genius, and the dignity of intellect; the heroism of virtue, and the constancy of misfortune. For these elevated purposes it was essential that the progress of the species should not be too rapid; that earth should not be replenished merely with rude unthinking husbandmen; that his command over the elements should increase with the elements with which he had to contend; and that the growth of the human mimd should keep pace with the enlargement of the species." This may be the first time that an economist says subdue the earth. This was one of the most important developments in political economy in the 19th century for that matter ever. The jewels of mankind are found in political economists, who represent Man as in the image of his Maker. |
