On the "horns of a dilemma"

deacon7771: I work in a "right to work" state, that means that the LAW says you cannot be forced to join a union for any job. I have mixed feelings about this "right to work" law, it is both good and bad in different ways. The place where I work is heavily unionized, most people there are in the UAW, the UAW by the way is a horribly corrupt and very powerful union. When I started work there 2010, I joined the union, but I REALLY HATED the local union leadership, I hated the national UAW leadership as well because they are such a corrupt bunch of thieves, using union funds to pay for remodeling their own homes, buying private fishing lodges for themselves and such, with the union members dues that are not supposed to be abused like that. Finally, the "straw that broke the camel's back" came in the 2016 election when the UAW endorsed and contributed to the campaign of a politician who I just could not tolerate. I felt so angry about that final thing that I dropped out of the UAW, and became a much hated pariah at my workplace. It has been three years now, I cannot put in words how much I really hate the local UAW chapter leadership, and I also really hate the national UAW corrupt leaders, but I have to grudgingly admit that the pay I get is MUCH better because of the corrupt UAW. Most of my friends at work are in the union, and I do believe in the ideals of a workers union, I just cannot tolerate the corruption at all levels of the UAW. So you see my dilemma, I WANT TO BE IN THE UNION, but I just cannot tolerate how corrupt the national UAW leadership is, and I am so revolted by the outright laziness and lying done by the local union leadership. It almost feels like the union is a criminal "mafia" like organization. So, do I push down my ethics and morals and go back into the union? That would for me feel like taking a bath in a cesspool, or do I continue to be an ostracized pariah who gets high pay (thanks mostly to the corrupt union) and does not pay union dues for that good pay?

Wikkaman: I'd say stick to your gut instinct. You sound like you hate everything about it.
You can answer your own question. Toss a coin. Heads is rejoin, tails is keep out.
Obey the coins decision for a while, and see how that sits with you.
The coin tells you what you truly want, you will know if you want to change your answer.
Work to educate those in the Union, ok you can casually state your opinions, but dont go around dissing it, be more invisible. You can gain respect from these people if you quietly go your own way. Fuck em, if they think you are a fool, only you know whats best.

deacon7771: Yesterday, the UAW held a "strike vote," more than 90% voted "yes," that is to strike if the bargaining process goes bad. For at least the last ten years, UAW bargaining representatives have been accepting bribes under the table and their abysmal results have shown it. But now, is seriously worry that for the first time in years they might actually be trying to get a better deal for the union membership, IF I really believed the bargaining representatives were trying to serve the membership I would re-join the UAW, but I still just don't trust the backstabbers so I remain a "scab." Unfortunately, this upcoming bargaining negotiation looks like there may actually be a real strike, and I will actually have to cross a union picket line. I sincerely don't want to ever cross a picket line, I don't ever violate boycotts either. So now, I am gambling, actually betting my soul that the bargaining representatives will continue to be the backstabbers that they have always been, and NOT call a strike. If they do actually try to bargain for a better deal for the membership, they will probably call a strike, and I will probably quit my job without any union protection because I just won't cross a picket line. It's a weird and unfortunate position I am in, I won't pay union dues to a corrupt and incompetent union, yet IF the unthinkable happens and the union actually does try to represent the membership... OH the hell with it. I needed a change in my life, my future is probably going to be begging.... "brother, can you spare a dime?"
