ARE BRITISH AIRWAYS THE WORLDS WORTS AIRLINE FOR THEIR TREATMENT OF VETERANS

dave3974:
Former flying aces Dave Fellowes, 93, and George Dunn, 94, were booked to fly from Gatwick to Glasgow this Friday to give a talk at the Boswell Book Festival in Ayrshire.

But Mr Fellowes was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer and is now too ill to travel.

Another veteran, former Lancaster navigator Hal Gardner, 92, volunteered to take his place.

But the festival organisers were not allowed to change the name on the ticket and had to buy a third for £333 – nearly double the original £185 fare and refused to discuss it further .

I think they need reminding that if it wasn’t for these heroes they would be called German Airways instead

But after publisher Steve Darlow, of Fighting High publishing, who was accompanying the veterans, posted the details on Facebook, BA faced a torrent of criticism.

One critic said: “I think they need reminding that if it wasn’t for these heroes they would be called German Airways instead.”

Another said: “Shame on British Airways.”

But, after the Daily Express newspaper contacted BA, the airline had a rethink when it looked like they would loose disgusted customers .

At first it refunded the cost of the cheaper ticket.

It then refunded the difference in price between the original and the more expensive ticket – effectively refunding the full £333.

Mr Dunn, from Saltdean, East Sussex, welcomed the company’s decision.

The former Halifax and Mosquito pilot, who flew 44 operations including the famous Peenemunde raid on Hitler’s doodlebug research station in 1943, said: “I am very pleased to hear it.

chronology
chronology: Dave it could be an 'expiry date' issue.

Gulf War Veterans and Iraq War Veterans as well as pensions have many benefits such as allowances for Prescriptions and free medical check ups etc. But if am not mistaken they will expire around 50 years after the conflict. That is just the usual time limit the M.O.D. sets on Benefits.

In the U.S.A. there is or was anyway, one woman who still received a Civil War Pension. She married an Old Veteran when she was young and remained eligible for her pension all her life from Washington.

It does sound sad dave that an airline would not help any elderly pilot, military or civilian. Few elderly pilots aged 94 would have any savings left so a kind gesture from any airline would go a long way to brighten their sunset years.
