Fact is people are willing to pay money to go and watch sport, they will watch it on TV which off course means sponsors want to get involved. Sport as a industry is huge, it actually does create jobs, I mean the teams need coaches, they need medical staff, sports science staff, the events create tourism, stadiums need to hire staff to maintain the playing surface and the facilities, they hire caterers etc. Could go on and on.
