ITS FOOTBALL, NOT SOCCER!!! (Page 6) Comrade_: *yawns* So when can we expect Canada to qualify for the Football World Cup? *snicker* Fogwar, you mightn't know this but we don't focus or even bother with Rugby here, however the US & other countries that get butthurt off the word "football" have tried and tried...and...still trying. Comrade_: haaha Haiti! the country virtually unknown for football, dude c'mon shhh I don't care what you guys call the sport. Countries that play the game call it 'football' but does the name matter when you really suck at it? FogofWar: You won't. When can we expect to see your nation's team make a run for the IIHF hockey championship? How about go for gold in the Olympic hockey run? Keep your sport; we don't care nor want it; just like you don't care about hockey. Funny, the only people I see get all upset about the word Football is soccer fans when you call it soccer and not football. Comrade_: you don't care? yet They continue to try to qualify for World Cup? hmm I believe that the countries that "don't care" are the ones that don't "try"...kinda like what we're doing here think about it. FogofWar: Then why do all the European countries keep trying in hockey??? Seems every year; France England, Italy, and countless others are among the teams duking it out for dead last. FogofWar: Keep riding your high horse buddy. Your precious FIFA world cup isn't even aired on the stations here. Comrade_: Is this not Ruby vs Football...or did you just bring in Hockey cus you had no come-back? haahaha Do you want me to bring in European Gymnastics into this too? Maybe Chess or Cricket...haa well this was fun while it lasted. Comrade_: HAAHAHAHA who cares if you guys get to see FIFA or not? it's just funny that you came here trying to pull some dumb point...shhh shh settle down TEDUBS: the only point that needs to be made and has been made a DOZEN times, is that it is called SOCCER! FogofWar: ...and that the term Soccer originated in England; not the US. So again; if you don't want it called any other name than football; why did you call it another name??? :O I brought hockey in because it's what we Canadians play; not soccer. You laugh at Canada for not having a soccer team; well guess what; there's tons of sports you don't have teams for too. It's funny though; how upset you people get over it being called soccer. Comrade_: two words one for each of you: Blah blah...and a bonus blah NOW SILENCE!...and we'll teach you how to play takes more than skills. FogofWar: Association football; also known as soccer; was an attempt to standardize the rules of football in England. The Cambridge University first drew up the Association Football game in 1848. Rugby School adopted their version of football around 1750. So of the two games of Football; Rugby is the older. Football is actually defined as several team sports in which the object is to advance the ball into a goal area to score. Football has never been a rule specific game; and so, many versions were created to make structured games; all of which are versions of football. The term football refers to a class of sport; and not a particular game in general. Among the versions of football are: Association Football (also known as Assoc. Football; Socca Football, or Soccer). American Football Australian Rules Football Canadian Football Gaelic Football Rugby league Football Rugby Union Football So to claim that any one of these sports is 'real' football is wrong. They are all versions of Football; none of which is the 'real' football in which they all came. The term football did not come into use by the action of kicking the ball with the foot; but actually has its origins in medieval Europe; where the game was played on foot (as opposed to on horse like polo). It was played more commonly among peasants as horse riding sports were played by more noble aristocrats. So the term originated to describe a type of sport played by common peasants, not a specific game in general. Now, to find the origins of the sports of football: The games of football date back beyond medieval peasants. The Romans played a game called 'harpastum'. The game is not fully known anymore; but from descriptions uncovered by Romans; it involved a centre line; in which the object was to carry; or throw the ball into your end (or end zone if you will); to score points. The opposing team would try and recover the ball. Not much is known on how exactly this was achieved; but the description of several injuries insists that it was a violent game; probably involving much contact. So the Roman game of Harpastum appears to be far more similar to Rugby than to Soccer. Harpastum was a Romanized version of the Greek game of "Episkyros". In fact Harpastum is the Romanized word of the Greek "Harpastos" meaning "carried away". Episkyros was played in teams of 12 to 14 payers each; with one ball which the rules allowed using the hands. Evidence shows this was a violent game. Players would throw the ball over the heads of the other team. Each team had a zone in their end; marked out by white lines. The object was to force the opposing team behind the line at their end. So we see that the origin of "Football" comes from a game in which the object was to throw the ball; and to tackle the opposing team. Sounds like one version of Football played today huh? It would also seem that the term football is nothing more than a class of sport; so to call any game solely football is wrong. :O The correct terms are: American Football and Association Football. Of course naturally; where ever one version of the game is more common it will naturally be known as the short form of "football". Comrade_: Yes I do laugh at them having a poor football team and you coming boasting about football. We don't have a hockey team here think on that. *******------- ps. FogofWar: When have I boasted about our soccer team? Quite the contrary actually. And what country do you live in? FogofWar: You're right caveman...that was fun while it lasted. Nice try on you making everyone else look wrong...worked out real well for you. When have I ever "boasted about Canada's football (as in soccer) team? Please provide this quote. I will boast about our Canadian football teams in comparison to yours. Would you like to compare them as well? ...or will you just continue to point out the one sport in which your nation is better than those who don't care to play? Again, this was fun while it lasted. FogofWar: So what have we learned in this forum? Is it football or soccer? It's Association football. FogofWar: Football= game played with a ball; sphere or spheroid, played on foot=any form of game that derived from the Greek derivative. enigmaticpuzzle: Football = supremely a more skillful game than any of it's derivatives (spelt wrong i think???) - Here's to hoping Perth Glory do slightly better this year! | Sports Chat Room Similar Conversations |
