FogofWar: Nosferatu said: "I took martial arts briefly and even the experienced veterans admitted all that fancy footwork was no use in a real fight." yup, he's never been in a real fight. Footwork is the most essential part of combat. from modern day military combat, you can fire a gun more accurately depending on the placement of your feet. A pitcher throws the ball in the EXACT direction he points his toe opposite his throwing arm. A sword can be swung in 7 different strokes bepending on where one's feet are placed. Bruce Lee himself said the most essential thing to first learn is footwork. From the ancient Egyptians, to the Spartans, to the Roman legions, to the medieval knights, to the Shaolin Monks, and the Muay Thai kickboxers, to the Samurai and the Ninja, to the modern day soldiers, footwork is essential for maintaining balance and proper positioning. That comment you made Nosferatu is why you have no confidence when confronted by an aggressor; and why your mind cannot focus on what it needs to. "That's why that nerdy kid at school who got a black belt was clobbered by a six foot bully." actually that is not why; it is called Zen, and it is crucial to study in order to learn any martial art. Nikhail said: "BTW nos is actually right with some of what he says alot of people are really "high level" martial artists in there specific art but its actually not very practical, but when its a real Fight or even a good sparring match its compleatly different." It IS practical, but that is not why they have such flaws. Most martial arts schools are taught by black belts yes, but not taught by Zen masters. Martial Arts is nothing more than a set of moves; be it Kung-fu, Karate, Ninjitsu, White Crane, She Quan, Jeet Kune Do, Jujitsu, Tae-kwon doe, or whatever, it is nothing more than a series of moves, and how to perform them. Zen is the ability to use them; without the Zen training, one cannot master the arts. It is like learning to stick handle then playing a game of hockey without first learning to skate. It's like learning the different batting techniques, but not first learning the rules of baseball. Zen teaches how to keep the mind focused, and how not to linger, and focus on the wrong things; it teaches how to use the moves.....one cannot master an art without learning the theory of the art first. It's like an artist learning brushstrokes without learning how to paint. "Like ali said everybodys got a plan until they get hit" FogofWar: The same has been said of military strategy. No battle plan survives contact with the enemy. Once engaged, things will change. The US infantry journal says: If your attack is going too well, your in an ambush. The master will be able to make adjustments in the heat of the battle; this is Zen; and to do that, they need to be able to focus their mind on soley the enemy...not the moves they are doing. To pay attention to your moves, means you are not attent to what the enemy is doing, and thus you are vulnerable....this is the importance of Zen. Zen teaches that one can learn thousands of possible moves, but it only takes one to end it. Knowing only one strike, you can succeed time and time again if you are able to utilize it better....this is Zen. Learning all the moves in the world are of no advantage unless you understand how to use them. Unless one is willing to devote the time to meditation, to learn to keep the mind focused in battle, and then the time to study of Zen, and then the time to study of a martial art, and then devote the time to the excersize required to maintain peak physical fitness, then one will not perfect it, and will always be vulnerable...this is why the black belt 'nerdy' kid in school got picked on. The point of the fighting styles is to find one that works for you, a style that fits naturally.... joskirin said: "i prefer using guns.." Heard that many times; those people failed military training, or learned in a hurry otherwise. A gun is only as useful as the person using it. The Zulu warriors killed over a million British, armed with musket rifles, when the Zulu's had nothing more than an ilkwa spear and shield. All Armed Forces accross the world train in disarming a hostile threat. What will you do when the gun is taken from your hands? That is why the Forces still use bayonets to this day. jjasmine: ok - sorry I have left the ring due to indigestions... how is the situation - oops - both on the floor???why?? guess who: The big problems with the martial arts is people used to study it to be able to defend themselves when and or if necessary but these days everyone one including the bullies also study it so as far as I am concerned it is obsolete. Nobody studies it for the discipline and other mental aspects anymore everyone just wants to be a thug with a blackbelt which dishonors and disgraces the entire thing so I gave it up. modern dojos are also a disgrace they don't care who they train no honor or integrity anymore it is all about the money. PatyBoy: I use to do Muay Thai, but now I box. Because I now only box, I have neglected my stretches and I am not flexible anymore. Oh well, I'm a pretty good boxer. I want start doing grappling classes too. What is the best type to do? Would everyone agree it's BJJ? | Sports Chat Room Similar Conversations |
