brokedown00: why not psychological disorder. Just thought I would throw it out there. It's politically correct and it sounds like something that affects huge numbers of people

Ashleysing: Siren, there's a lot of debate on the nature vs nurture side of this. there are clearly a lot of psychological issues that open the path to addiction. The addiction itself is a series of unfortunately events, which at any point if someone were to step in and help, ... its easier to stop the earlier you identify what leaves the path open.

brokedown00: I say this because I'm guessing that 90 percent or more of addicts have an underlying mental illness which isn't treated by medication. If I didn't have the mental health issues, I probably wouldn't need to use drugs problematically

Ashleysing: i would argue the issue is not something that needs mediation. that's changing an addict to a dependent. Mental health and counseling is always the better choice.

brokedown00: Did you mean mediation or medication> Just need to know what I'm trying to get out to you. I use because I'm depressed as Hell. I'm not depressed because I use. Absolutely not but I do agree with you that a good counselor can really get you to open up and be vulnerable and that's where alot of healing can be done

brokedown00: Yeah well I need to be on the 3 antidepressants and a high dose of antipsychotics because it keeps me level. I wouldn't be able to sleep otherwise

Ashleysing: Not saying they are not helpful to some, but as a general rule most people need counseling more than medication. Medication only suppresses the symptoms it does not dress the causes. Unless, of course it’s a true chemical imbalance.
