As ovipara it clearly does not need a placenta. so it is quite probable it's "kind" was well before placental mammals. Are marsupials in fact placental mammals? Those are questions that, in my opinion, a biologist is more able to give a decent answer than myself.. I am not a biologists, though I am quite convinced that we might consider the platypus a transient "organism". As the mentioned living (transient) organisms by me - except otter/seals/ what are following me not transient on themselves but clear an indication of the possible steps: we have also those "similarities" in the "steps" amongst the turtles -. If we are going in the domain of physics and electronics I will express me quite lesser in terms of "in my opinion..." but more in terms of "it has been proven that ..", "science and technology shows us that..."... though if I don't know the answer I will have no problems to confess clearly that "I don't know". But, both fields were for me in that time not that "passionating". So it is for me still a mystery and may be I prefer to keep it also like that.
