kittybobo34: I have never seen any genetic trace of the Platypus lineage,, Australia is full of placental mammals, perhaps its simply a throwback to a time before placental evolution.

BelgianStrider: That might be probably the case Kitty, anyway it is evident the platypus is a mammal and ovipara.
As ovipara it clearly does not need a placenta. so it is quite probable it's "kind" was well before placental mammals.
Are marsupials in fact placental mammals?
Those are questions that, in my opinion, a biologist is more able to give a decent answer than myself.. I am not a biologists, though I am quite convinced that we might consider the platypus a transient "organism". As the mentioned living (transient) organisms by me - except otter/seals/ what are following me not transient on themselves but clear an indication of the possible steps: we have also those "similarities" in the "steps" amongst the turtles -.

BelgianStrider: Concerning the genetical lineage: it is not hard to presume that not every creature's genome is fully known till now, probably in the future it's genetical place in the tree will be clearly indicated. my humble opinion

Enkidu2017: and mythological gnomes ........

BelgianStrider: Enkidu that's now what science is... I confess I am not a biologists, I confess I don't know everything...
Though I do posses an analytical capacity and some basic logics, so I can make some "conclusions". I know quite well that with the limited knowledge I posses my "conclusions" might be complete in error.
So those are the reasons of my "humble opinions".
If we are going in the domain of physics and electronics I will express me quite lesser in terms of "in my opinion..." but more in terms of "it has been proven that ..", "science and technology shows us that..."... though if I don't know the answer I will have no problems to confess clearly that "I don't know".
I know my limitations and I know biology is not my domain and I can NOT claim my thinking as truth (on the contrary what some zealots clearly do, brandishing arrogantly the claim of the complete truth that can not be put in doubt).

So yes, the complotting satanic scientists have tendency to be humble, even the great Einstein did show that too...

And, you pointed out correctly, we should not deny the existence of mythological gnomes in Harry Potter's world.
Though pls notice there is a very small "e" between the "g" and the "n", that might have some semantic reason....
just a small linguistic observation:

Pssst I have not a doctorate in literature so I will say it quite clearly
"in my humble opinion that small "e" might have it's importance"

BelgianStrider: Well if you want to have fun with language, intentions and especially semantics I might advice you to get it with zeffur and blackshoes. Zeffur is exceptional concerning the possession of a limited sense of semantics btw

BelgianStrider: That's a fact: nothing is endless, I do confess that I also am confronted to things that are beyond my comprehension (especially in quantum mechanics, DNA and micro biology needs specialisation, that I do not posses and the consequence is I am "limited"
Is that a handicap? yes and no.
Yes, for the fully understanding. No, for the global concept

BelgianStrider: You know, to be honest, I did hear vaguely about such things, it can be indeed a passionate field in biology to study chemically "passions". But, both fields were for me in that time not that "passionating". So it is for me still a mystery and may be I prefer to keep it also like that.
I think, it will be, for myself, a bummer to know that I am producing, now at this specific moment, that amount of dopamine and serotonin...
Just my humble feeling about that...
