ghostgeek: It's interesting to see that the Taliban are still in the field in Afghanistan and seems in no hurry to depart. The Americans, on the other hand, do seem in a desperate rush to get out of the place.

Just seen this report:

Attacks on schools in Afghanistan tripled between 2017 and 2018, surging from 68 to 192, according to the UN children’s agency, Unicef, the first increase since 2015.

According to figures collected by the agency, the ongoing conflict had left more than 1,000 schools closed by the end of last year, with half a million children unable to get an education.

Clearly, all that posturing by politicians that the war was won was a little premature.

ghostgeek: It terrifies me when people say, "We know for a fact that ...." That's when you get the pogroms and persecutions, when people are certain that what they believe is actually true. This shows itself quite clearly with climate research when people talk about a non-existent consensus and demonise anyone who has the temerity to say, "But wait a moment ...."

ghostgeek: David Roberts is a blogger over at the green website Gristmill, which is associated with Grist, the online environmental magazine that bills itself as "Gloom and doom with a sense of humor®." On September 19, 2006, evidently fed up with climate change deniers, Roberts made an interesting suggestion for how to resolve scientific issues. To wit: "When we've finally gotten serious about global warming, when the impacts are really hitting us and we're in a full worldwide scramble to minimize the damage, we should have war crimes trials for these bastards—some sort of climate Nuremberg." Roberts is far from alone. As Brendan O'Neill over at spiked points out, "climate change deniers" are now being likened by some activists to Holocaust deniers or even Nazis themselves. Apparently, it is no longer acceptable to question in polite company the hypothesis that humanity is causing catastrophic climate change.

It’s Time to Try Fossil-Fuel Executives for Crimes Against Humanity

This gets me wondering. If people believe carbon dioxide emissions are the root cause of global warming, and they want to do something about it, they can always stop using fossil fuels. They don't have to drive in their big cars and they don't have to turn on the air conditioning, or watch the television or do the many, many other things that fossil fuels make possible. They can return to the stone age and feel very smug.

kittybobo34: Ghost,, the above comments about trials, were based on the fact that the oil companies knew , but hid the information. There is another issue too, they consistently financed research on more efficient engines and alternative fuels, then got the patent and shelved the research.

ghostgeek: Now here's a thought. Did the Romans bore the world with doom-mongering about the internal combustion engine, seeing it was as hot then as now?

Jan Esper of Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, thinks that at least some of those tree rings actually show something else: a long-term cooling trend that lasted right up until the Industrial Revolution. The trend came about because of reduced solar heating caused by changes to the Earth’s orbit known as Milankovitch wobbles, says Esper. His results suggest the Roman world was 0.6 °C warmer than previously thought – enough to make grape vines in northern England a possibility.

Esper and his colleagues say that warmer summers do not necessarily make tree rings wider – but they often make them denser. He studied the density of tree rings in hundreds of northern Scandinavian trees and found that they showed evidence of a gradual cooling trend that began around 2000 years ago.

ghostgeek: Esper says temperature reconstructions will have to be redone because past studies probably underestimated temperatures during the medieval warm period and other warm periods going back to Roman times. The further back in time, the greater the underestimate would be.
