zeffur: The future is solar + high-energy-density storage materials that produce extremely low levels of dangerous byproducts--compared to nuclear & other sources of energy conversion.

Graphene is projected to have a higher specific energy than Lithium borohydride.

ghostgeek: Something to think about when it comes to solar power:

It had been a beautiful sunny day, but as I looked out of my study window I could see a large, dark cloud passing over.

As the gloom descended, somewhere in the house a humming noise began — the sound of my wife starting up the vacuum cleaner. I raced out of the room, almost falling down the stairs in my eagerness to hit the off switch.

'What are you doing?' I demanded of Mrs H. 'It's been sunny all day and now you're vacuuming just as the sun has gone in.'

I suspect most wives would have stared at their husband as if he were a raving madman. Thankfully, the ever-patient Mrs H has become used to such outbursts ever since we had solar panels installed. ...

Our system is supposed to be capable of producing 4 kilowatts — though the highest it peaked at is 3.9 kW, and only then for a brief moment in the summer.

Nevertheless, when the sun is out we can run the dishwasher, washing machine or — at the height of the day — a tumble drier without it costing a penny.

For a money-wise person like me (a former editor of Money Mail) this has led to behaviour which, according to my wife, borders on the deranged.

When the clouds refused to break through during the last few days of August, our washing overflowed from its basket and the crockery was ready to climb out of the dishwasher on its own.

In fact, bad weather can reduce me to despair — as can freak conditions. The Sahara sand that coated everyone's car in the spring was a curiosity to most. To me, it was lost revenue as production from my panels dipped until the next cloudburst washed them clean.

Until the power renewables produce can be stored, anybody relying on this form of energy generation wil find themselves beholden to the weather.

Most 'normal' people won't use a solar only system. They'll have it grid-tied. Then they don't have to pay any attention to whether or not it is sunny. Others, who can afford it, will have a 3-day battery system if they want to be completely off-grid. Once again, in that setup there is no need to be concerned with what the clouds are doing.

ghostgeek: I live in the UK and right now, as we approach summer, the sky is totally obscured by cloud. Not a peek of the sun. What's worse, it's been like this for weeks, with only the occasional day when you see some sunshine. Those clouds must make a big difference to the amount of power being generated from solar.

ghostgeek: Then there is windpower. On cold winter days the wind can be so still that little power is generated by windmills. Without suitable power storage, renewables are hit and miss.

duncan124:
There is a big Wind farm near Great Yarmouth and whenever you drive past they are never working even on windy days and the whole thing is a tax and crime scam.

Solar, Wind and Hydro are all supplements for your home. If can do any of those you would have electrical devices outside in the garden or shed or whatever. And the idea is to save money and maybe survive better if there are power cuts.

The advice is to stay on the grid for your home to keep yourself secure, but be a good accountant for anything else and stop thinking you can use electricity without paying for it.
