theHating: i believe you are talking about the kyoto protocol, apologies if i misspelled kyoto.
that was a summit to get developing nations like china to participate in the IPCC policy guidlines, and basically the US said they wouldnt curb emissions unless china and these other countries did the same thing. and what the developing nations argue is that it isnt fair policy because the US pollutes 10x per capita what china does, even with its population being 3 or so times larger.

well, the US absolutely refused to agree to that in contempt of taking any meaningful action.

so yes, i agree, squirrel, it makes no sense for the US to claim moral authority over developing nations. but at the same time, developing nations still made a promise to curb emissions when they have reached the same levels per capita as the US, so we will see how china acts when this happens. but nevertheless, the US did finally recognize that some action is better than no action, and now we are adopting more moderate policy towards environmental friendly policy to curb emissions and tax incentives for developing renewable clean fuels like bio-diesel and PEM technology for hydrolyzed chemical combustion engines.

theHating: the point is this;
the climate is changing, rapidly. the scenario is that in 20 years, the climate sensitivity will be such that you will need to prepare certain regions for basic supply shortages. by prepare, they mean hedge against risk of loss or depletion of resources like water, energy, and food.

furthermore, places that were hospitable to agriculture will not be viable to grow in, in 20 years. droughts will be intensified by a factor of 10, and as averages move up, snow pack lasts only until mid spring, until you lose winter entirely and the forest land begins to suffer from run-off inconsisencies.

if it doesnt scare you, you are a psychopath. if you believe it was engineered to scare you, then you just simply do not understand the science and you are seriously risking your own life by not taking even baby steps to transition and adapt with a rapidly warming planet.

theHating: an analogy:

the science claims the saharan desert is very hot and very dry.

do you criticize him for ideology or do you bring water and say, breathable clothing?

please excuse me for my piss-poor analogies.

zeffur: Climate change is a complex subject--there seems to be many factors involved.

Solar activity is one of the major factors. Greater solar activity leads to higher max temps, more ice melting, greater evaporation, cooling in some areas more than others areas as weather patterns shift, & greater rainfall & increased temporary flooding. It can also lead to some areas experiencing persistent & permanent flooding.

Human activity seems to be playing a major role as well. Since ~1976 there has been an increased trend in warming. Some factors are greater fossil fuel consumption, major conversion of land from natural forms into farms, habitat (for humans & animals) developments, etc. This changes the natural composition of our atmosphere in major ways, which leads to the belief in a greater than normal green-house like affect on earth.

How much each factor contributes to such changes is hotly debated.

If mankind would make graphene energy storage systems & solar & wind energy production (where it makes sense) a higher priority, then we could see within 1 decade how much fossil fuel consumption affects climate change.
