Why is the climate changing.

ghostgeek
ghostgeek: Reports of a sixteen year old girl haranguing the UK parliament over climate change made me think of the theories of Henrik Svensmark. He claims that it isn't carbon dioxide in the air that alters the climate to any great degree. Rather, he believes, it's changes in the sun affecting the quantity of cosmic rays bombarding the earth that's the culprit. It would seem that the greater the number of cosmic rays hitting the earth's atmosphere, the greater the cloud cover. As I sat shivering this morning because it was so cloudy, I couldn't help thinking that Svensmark might be right.

Its a very sunny 13oc in East Anglia with little or no wind and little cloud. Clear blue skys for most.

It is an interesting theory, that cosmic rays change the temperature but I doubt it is the real cause or the chain of events are as he says.

The Less is More theory of a Solar Minimum mean that there is less cloud and so for us on the ground the temperature rises as there is more Sun light.

ghostgeek: When the sun is less active more cosmic rays reach the earth and more cloud is produced. And seeing that thick cloud can reduce the energy from the sun hitting the earth by up to 50% there is no surprise it has a big impact on climate.

duncan124:

Cosmic rays only produce rain clouds as a side effect of the reactions to them. When there is no moisture for clouds there will be no clouds what ever else happens.

The rays will hit the ground....and the water.

Without clouds the heating power of the Sun increases...and looking at the satellite images there seems in fact to be less clouds.

The most important fact in temperatures seems to be the wind which is the motive force which moves hot and cold air about...or else things are stagnant and little moves and Less is more of less.

ghostgeek: Writing in Real Clear Markets, Aaron Brown looked at the official NASA global temperature data and noticed something surprising. From February 2016 to February 2018, "global average temperatures dropped by 0.56 degrees Celsius." That, he notes, is the biggest two-year drop in the past century.
"The 2016-2018 Big Chill," he writes, "was composed of two Little Chills, the biggest five month drop ever (February to June 2016) and the fourth biggest (February to June 2017). A similar event from February to June 2018 would bring global average temperatures below the 1980s average."

ghostgeek: There was the study published in the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Climate showing that climate models exaggerate global warming from CO2 emissions by as much as 45%. It was ignored.

Then there was the study in the journal Nature Geoscience that found that climate models were faulty, and that, as one of the authors put it, "We haven't seen that rapid acceleration in warming after 2000 that we see in the models."

Nor did the press see fit to report on findings from the University of Alabama-Huntsville showing that the Earth's atmosphere appears to be less sensitive to changing CO2 levels than previously assumed.

How about the fact that the U.S. has cut CO2 emissions over the past 13 years faster than any other industrialized nation? Or that polar bear populations are increasing? Or that we haven't seen any increase in violent weather in decades?

ghostgeek: The climate alarmists just can’t catch a break. NASA is reporting that the sun is entering one of the deepest Solar Minima of the Space Age; and Earth’s atmosphere is responding in kind.

So, start pumping out that CO2, everyone. We’re going to need all the greenhouse gases we can get.

“We see a cooling trend,” said Martin Mlynczak of NASA’s Langley Research Center. “High above Earth’s surface, near the edge of space, our atmosphere is losing heat energy. If current trends continue, it could soon set a Space Age record for cold.”

The new data is coming from NASA’s Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry or SABER instrument, which is onboard the space agency’s Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite. SABER monitors infrared radiation from carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitric oxide (NO), two substances that play a vital role in the energy output of our thermosphere, the very top level of our atmosphere.

“The thermosphere always cools off during Solar Minimum. It’s one of the most important ways the solar cycle affects our planet,” said Mlynczak, who is the associate principal investigator for SABER

ghostgeek: "THE EARTH IS ACTUALLY COOLING," NASA says due to low sun activity: Record Plunge despite Rising Co2. The 0.8* C increase over 140 years is too small and within the range of natural variability to constitute human-made global warming.

ghostgeek: Climate change itself is already in the process of definitively rebutting climate alarmists who think human use of fossil fuels is causing ultimately catastrophic global warming. That is because natural climate cycles have already turned from warming to cooling, global temperatures have already been declining for more than 10 years, and global temperatures will continue to decline for another two decades or more. That is one of the most interesting conclusions to come out of the seventh International Climate Change Conference sponsored by the Heartland Institute, held last week in Chicago.

"Check out the 20th-century temperature record, and you will find that it's up and down pattern does not follow the industrial revolution's upward march of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), which is the supposed central culprit for man-caused global warming and has been much, much higher in the past. It follows instead the up and down pattern of naturally caused climate cycles," says Peter Ferrara, who served as one of the speakers at the conference.

"Temperatures dropped steadily from the late 1940s to the late 1970s. The popular press was even talking about a coming ice age. Ice ages have regularly occurred roughly every 10,000 years, with a new one actually due around now." Ferrara said.

Ferrara adds that "In the late 1970s, the natural cycles turned warm and temperatures rose until the late 1990s, a trend that political and economic interests have tried to milk mercilessly to their advantage." Actually, the incorruptible satellite measured global atmospheric temperatures show less warming during this period than the heavily manipulated land surface temperatures.

But that is not all. Earth is also currently experiencing a surprisingly long period with very low sunspot activity. That is associated with the earth's history with even lower, colder temperatures. The pattern was seen during a period known as the Dalton Minimum from 1790 to 1830, which saw temperature readings decline by two degrees in a 20-year period, and the noted Year Without A Summer in 1816.

ghostgeek: The outstanding question now is just how cold this present cold cycle will get. Will it be modest like the cooling from the late 1940s to late 1970s? Or will the lack of sunspots drive us all the way down to the Dalton Minimum, or even the Maunder Minimum?

ghostgeek: Try reading "The Chilling Stars: A New theory of Climate Change" by Henrik Svensmark and Nigel Calder. Henrik Svensmark, you might like to know, is a is physicist, leads the Center for Sun-Climate Research at the Danish National Space Center and has published more than 50 scientific papers on theoretical and experimental physics, including nine on climate physics. In other words, somebody who knows a thing or two about science.
