Comet impact possible..! (Page 2)

Corwin: I suppose you've never heard of the Cheyenne Mountain Complex in Colorado? Home of NORAD?
It's essentially the equivalent of a 5 story building built inside of a mountain within solid granite, and specially designed to be completely sealed off from the outside world, and able to easily withstand a direct hit from a 30 Megaton nuclear strike.

Probably a safer place to be than on a boat or in a car park... which is why they didn't locate NORAD's headquarters on a boat or in a car park.

And seriously... if a giant asteroid struck the Earth, and sent a 10,000 meter tsunami around the world traveling at hypersonic speeds, a boat would be the LAST place you'd want to be... you might just find yourself in orbit; although after being hit with that shock wave there wouldn't be much left of you. A submarine submerged deep enough could at least stay below the wave-front... but I'd still prefer to be nice and cozy within the Cheyenne Mountain Complex.

Luna Azule: I bet that's why Musk is building space ships. The rich and the smart will be the ones to start the human race over on Mars. Of course they'll need people to do the daily chores while they're thinking and buying so Mexicans will also have to come along as well.

Corwin: They'd select the best and brightest of the Mexicans, and they would hand out special badges to those who would be saved from global doom and have passage aboard the spaceship.

And the Mexicans would say, "Badges?!.... We don't need no stinking badges!"

(I just couldn't resist)

Luna Azule: Some goofy family of mine were seriously considering getting a bomb shelter in the late 50s'. They said I could join them, so even thou very young at the time, I researched atom bomb after blast info and realized that between living in a concrete bunker with relatives for years or turning into French fry with hair, I'll get as close to the landing site as possible.

Corwin: Absofrickinlutely. I remember about 15 years ago, NASA had predicted a possible doomsday comet hitting us in 2036 (later more accurate calculations showed that it would miss us with a fair margin), but I thought the same thing.
Fat chance I'd be selected to live in the underground bunkers with the chosen few, and even then you'd spend the rest of your days as Spam in a can.

There would be a 4 out of 5 chance it would hit ocean, so I figured I'd buy a nice big boat to live on... when it approached closer they'd have a good fix on exactly where it would hit, and I'd park my boat about 200 kms from ground zero... have a nice comfy deck-chair, a cooler of refreshments, and some VERY dark sunglasses (welding goggles most likely), and sit back and enjoy the show from front-row seats.

A quick merciful death with one hell of a view (better than the long agonizing death of attempting to survive the post-apocalyptic horror), and there's a good chance that what's left of me and my boat might even get hurled into outer space.
