duncan124:

It is a theory that came along with Supernovas.

It was said the Catholic church looked in to the theory to see if it was something God like but came to no conclusion because it was just a theory.

calybonos: I think the supernova or Nova SS (Super Sport) was a really fast car made by Chevrolet in 1968 with the big-block 396 V8.

**Not to be confused with the Ford Galaxie 500

Corwin: Supernova's can only be stopped with Kryptonite... a hypernova can be easily be settled down with Ritalin.

Corwin: A hypernova is just a really really big stellar nova... bigger than a supernova.

We normally don't like to give a straight answer to these sorts of questions until a year has passed.

Batman809: could a h-nova say from 100 lioght yrs away reach earth

Corwin: If a hypernova happened within 100 light years from Earth, all life on this planet would be wiped out... the atmosphere would be stripped away, and the surface bathed in lethal radiation and cosmic rays.

Fortunately, there doesn't seem to be any candidate stars that large that are that close... so we should be okay, at least for the next few billion years. Our stellar neighborhood changes as we orbit the galactic center, so in a few billion years, who knows... also the Andromeda Galaxy will collide with the Milky Way in a few billion years, and that will stir things up a bit as far as our stellar neighbors are concerned.

Corwin: Or rather just colonize other planets in other solar systems. Demise by supernova/hypernova is the least of our worries.

There's really no safe place to be, and the Universe is a hostile place. The Earth is slammed with a giant asteroid or comet every 50 million years or so, like the ELE (Extinction Level Event) that wiped out the dinosaurs... and we're overdue for the next one. We live in a cosmic shooting gallery. Just look at all the craters on the Moon... the Earth has been slammed just as many times, but the craters are erased with tectonics and erosion.

Arther C. Clarke was quoted as saying, in regards to the next ELE, "It's not a matter of IF, but of WHEN, and the best way to ensure the survival of the Human race is to make sure we're not all here in one place when it happens."

Corwin: No safer than any other planet. It gets slammed with asteroids and comets just like all the planets. Like I said, "a cosmic shooting gallery". The Universe is a hostile place.

In fact Earth might be safer... it has been theorized that giant Jupiter may have the gravitational effect of deflecting a percentage of large asteroids and comets away from the inner solar system... like the solar system's big Zamboni. It's possible that we wouldn't even be here without Jupiter sweeping the inner solar system clear of a certain amount of that cosmic debris.
