echidnatas: Ok I can see this is hanging in the realms of imagination.Mental illness is suprisingly an illness and it has causes not always understood, there are physical treatments the least effective being a good talk on its own.The most effective is one or more of of several physical type treatments along with counseling and support.
My point being ? Seek the expertise of people with expertise And listen carefully,I did say people so that means more than one. From there ...up to you

new_tauresa: Robert.surely the experts must have taken a history of your symptoms....They don't need to listen to you all the time telling them the same thing. The experts need to treat your symptoms, give them time to do so.
Robert or do you just wanna live in your own world? We don't all need to get HIV to understand it's an illness.

Zanjan: Echidnatas: "And all those years gaining a degree and doctorate has been a waste."

Some doctors are better than others and it takes a long time to find the appropriate one. By that, I mean that one can see evidence of progress. Physicians should continue learning and keep a sharp eye out for things that have worked for others. A lot of people don't realize many so called new methods are really old ones.

I didn't mean to suggest it was as easy as telling a problem to go away; I was being brief, just to make a point. She learned something about the nature of thought and used visualization so that the thoughts went through her and kept on going, since they have no substance. It's not like I'd give a course on it here. Suffice to say, she was in a trauma group and everyone had some success with it - she was the worst case in the group.

Trauma is anything that has attacked and crippled one, even a bad parental upbringing.

Some of the best advice, after all other approaches are tried, has come from an ordinary friend who found success with something simple, though not always instant. This is true for any health problem.

While drugs will help with an emergency, that plan should be temporary while other methods are tried. Ideally, one should be weaned away from psychotropics; very few people with mental illness need to be institutionalized. This is not a society that likes to accept that a different way of life and being is ok for some.

Zanjan: Robert, you are right, what works for one may not work for another - it might actually kill them. Very few doctors really know their patients - what they know, the patient tells them. The best plan is to bring along a supporter to an appointment, someone who knows you well and can remember certain things you don't and even think of certain questions you wouldn't.

The key is progress - tiny increments are better than none. Nothing remains static - if one isn't going forward, they're going backward. Maintenance is an illusion. While maintaining control one either gradually gets a grip on it, or feeds into more dependence.

I understand you're looking to the past......usually though, you can't see a lot of difference in yourself unless it's in a long range view - others will tell us the difference before we, ourselves, see it. You mentioned "getting around the obstructions" - good point. A crippled person has to learn their own way to navigate, provided he has a mode of transportation.

You are so understanding. In religion & health you agree with me more than anyone.
I do find the people like doctors I go to Never walk a mile in my shoes. So I go away disappointed.
I did find a good doctor but both of them moved away to big east cost cities. I find it hard to find a friend even. People as so rivetted in their world . I have counsellor train yet I cannot stand back from my life and see me as I want see. To help as I have helped others. My life in some ways has been amazing. But I was never the boy I wanted to be and never normal like others boys. People saw me as GAY but I was only uncontrolabley SHY .

Zanjan: I'm thankful we have a special clubhouse in town - only those with a history of psychiatric treatment or visits can be members, although they can have guests. It's the envy of the town - everything you'd want a clubhouse to be so, we like to lasso a member and befriend them so we can get in on the action. Government funds it but it's a rare bird - only one in the big city. Not nearly enough.

Members run the place by volunteering while a psychiatric nurse is always on hand, full time. They have all kinds of functions and day trips, live music, short courses, talk groups, planning mtgs, walking groups, home made meals from its kitchen, cheap, like only $3 can each. The list goes on. The place always has members spending time there from morning to evening.

The biggest help comes from the members themselves; they're very friendly and make sure no one is a fly on the wall. These people are functional, some even hold down paid jobs and for those who don't, they have something important to do. No one is alone; all have friends.

There's not nearly enough advocates for this kind of project though. In Canada, last summer, one so afflicted made a commitment to advertise the needs - you might have heard of "Clara's Big Ride"; she rode a blue bicycle across Canada, and it got amazing media coverage for mental illness.

One person who made something of herself despite so many challenges never ceases to inspire.
