Should We Revive Long Gone Species Just Because We Can? (Page 5)

lori100: On his wall a certain ^^^Geo.. stated we in science forums are f##ktards "who should know to STFU and sit quietly in the corner until their betters are done speaking.", and that "The difference between genius and lunacy is that geniuses don't have time to continually argue in the forums with the lunatics"..........
........... LOL......there you have it -----Geo is everyone's 'better', and a 'genius' and we should all sit quietly and bask in his supreme superiority......

lori100: No, but maybe wire should have one wire for 'Geniuses and Betters' and another wire for 'Everyone Else'......perhaps a brain scan and a photo of the stack of science books one has read should be a requirement for the 'betters' in their wireclub

Corwin: Okay... now that we have a moment to discuss Aura's topic seriously....

I think bringing back a herd of Wooly Mammoths and transplanting them in Greenland would actually be quite glorious. It would likely be very expensive, and I'm sure they wouldn't survive in the long run, as Northern habitats are dwindling as it is...

... but wouldn't that be something... to see them for real instead of computerized simulations of what they "may" have looked like.
--------

Then the ethical question... just because we "can" do something, does that mean we "should"?

Well... should not we explore ALL avenues of what we can do?

We may be children who have been given "matches" to play with... but... isn't that what life is?
Sometimes a mutation gives rise to an advantage to survival... something that may or may not prove beneficial to the survival of a species.
----------

A quote from Arthur C. Clarke ----
"It has yet to be proven that intelligence has any survival value.”

We may be children playing with matches... we may blow ourselves up, or sew the seeds of our own destruction somehow... or we may have a very interesting future.

What do you think?

Serabi: Cloned Mammoths would not be a herd reproducing: they will all be male or female. Cute little mammoths won't be running around unless you bring frogs, starfish, etc. into the equation.

Cloning isn't as simple as the newspapers lead us to believe,,

No - Mammoths should not be cloned back onto modern day,
