Poll: Space Exploration is it or isn't it a 'waste' of time & money? (Page 4)

jsonaut: The argument that we should fix problems on earth before exploring space is short-sighted at best and criminal at worst. This planet is our only lifeline, if it goes, we go. Therefore, if any number of catastrophes hit the earth, we are all doomed.
We need to spread our eggs into other baskets so we won't be exterminated by the next pandemic or meteor or volcano.
Also, space is cool!!!

Nerdzrule22: i dont think either way we will be able to find life outside earth.. and even if there is its not meant for humans.. everything must come to an end and just like that this earth is going to end one day . but we have to make this world a better place for humans for as long as we inherit it and for that we need to stop wasting this earths resources on meaningless trips to space half the world could be fed by the amount of money we spent on travelling to moon or any other planet in space which in my opinion is a waste of time.

LiptonCambell: The problems of the world won't go away if we throw money at it slick. And the survival of life as we know it depends on our ability to adapt barren, lifeless worlds into worlds that can sustain life. If we succeed in leaving our world or even our solar system, then the issue of limited resources is moot.

Comrade_: Cambell, there're lots of giant leaps of hope in that one paragraph.

The problems in the world would need joint effort, brainpower and money (which has to be properly manage and open to transparency & accountability to avoid the corruption within the organisation).
We currently have a planet that is capable of sustaining life, for now we're not even 100% sure that there are other planets that will be able to sustain our life as Earth has&is.

jsonaut: Slick, are you serious? the budget for space is a drop in the ocean compared to what we spend on war, bailing out CEO's, and TV's!
If you haven't yet given up, and have a long view of the future, then space exploration is the only way we will survive as a species.
Also, if England thought the way you do, you wouldn't be in Canada, as there would have been no exploration and discovery.
Anyway, peace mate.

Comrade_: Think too on the amount of money gained. The US gained much more than what they put out in the moon-landings. Technologies that stemmed out from it with engineers putting their minds together. The money adds up in the end. Not a waste as what we normally throw money at.
Though I still get that nagging feeling that we have much to work with on our own planet...add to that history kinda shows we tend to make a mess of every new place we discover haa

JACK ROBERTS: I's rather fight a Klingon than deal with the hypocracies of humanity...and the bull.....we could have been on the moon and mars by now if civilization would put advancing sciences ahead of money and making war.

Comrade_: True QJR, or other planets outside of our system. Even if it may not happen at least by focusing on these things we will gain some knowledge that is out there that might help our own planet or our own mentality as humans.

I saw this on bbc today:
