Can Science Exist without Evolution? (Page 4) oh_good_laughs: You had a pretty good definition of theory, "a theory based on peer reviewed science, both observational and mathematical. It is self correcting, so [ideas] are modified as new observations are added to the evidence." What am i missing? Juba_The_Sniper: Ideas can be good, bad or indifferent. Any idea that does not stand up to peer review or scientific scrutiny is discarded. A theory as used in science is an explanation or model based on observation, experimentation, and reasoning. This is why creationists refuse to have their 'theories' be subject to peer review. Please lets not turn this in to a battle of semantics. Juba_The_Sniper: The big bang theory = scientific theory the theory of gravity = scientific theory evolution = scientific theory the heliocentric theory = scientific theory the idea of creationism = not a scientific theory oh_good_laughs: Theory, in common context, means scientific idea. You may build the word "idea" up as much as you like, but it doesn't change the word. Juba_The_Sniper: what is your definition of a scientific theory? why do you refuse to answer this question? oh_good_laughs: Juba, you left out some theories eh? The Blank Slate Theory - Scientific Theory The Phlogiston Theory - Scientific Theory The Expanding Earth Theory - Scientific Theory The Spontaneous Generation Theory - Scientific Theory oh_good_laughs: Obsolete? These Scientific Theories were all proven wrong. How is that possible for a Scientific Theory?, because it IS an IDEA of course. Juba_The_Sniper: I think anything would be an improvement on your total lack of scientific awareness. Try 'SCIENTIFIC THEORY' oh_good_laughs: Nice try Juba. It's clear as day, Theories are very subject to being wrong, being they ARE, an idea. Juba_The_Sniper: From your last comment it is ridiculously obvious that you still DO NOT understand what a scientific theory is. We both, know why this is. Because it is contrary to your religious beliefs. Juba_The_Sniper: you seem to think think that in science once you have a theory, and it's proven, it becomes a law. That is not true. Scientific theories are improved upon. This is why creationism isnt a scientific theory. The idea of gravity, doesn't mean that it's just a guess. It's been tested. Observations are supported by it and tested. A scientific theory is not just an idea. Juba_The_Sniper: I still want to hear your definition of what a scientific theory actually is. Until you know this, you are ill-equipped to discuss evolution or the 'big bang' oh_good_laughs: Okay, Juba. I know Scientific Theories have a lot of time and work in them. So i will go as far to say.. A long thought out idea. oh_good_laughs: A Scientific Theory = a long, thought-out, possible sweat and tears included, idea made by a certain group of people. What am i missing?, How is this not a definition? oh_good_laughs: Ah Juba, you just want me to polish up the word 'idea' a little more. Pfft, a waste of typing that would be. Juba_The_Sniper: it is really embarrassing that you refuse to understand matters of science. Also frightening that 40% of Americans think the same way you do. Juba_The_Sniper: when discussing matters of science you need to actually know what is meant by 'scientific theory' | Science Chat Room 1 Person Chatting Similar Conversations |
