The technology certainly exists, the data to plot the course was originally calculated on computers orders of magnitude less powerful than the smartphone the average person carries in their pocket all the time. During the cold war, a lot of the cost of development for the space program was actually put into intercontinental missile research - the only difference between an ICBM and a space rocket is the payload, beyond that it's the direction you point it. On top of that, you had the cultural capital of getting that biggest, "first," of the 20th century space race. The USSR had gotten first satellite, first dog, first man, and first woman. The USA had to catch up. There just isn't the will to spend that sort of money any more. They haven't even developed a replacement for the space shuttle, because the government won't fund them. Despite the fact that (due to spin offs from their research and commercial space requirements) NASA is the only agency of the US government which has consistently shown a profit (all ploughed back into research). briansmythe: Yeah thats fair enough. I just don't like all this space force stuff . I think a lot of the NASA missions over the years especially the shuttle were doing work in that direction.
