Natural vs. Artificial (Page 3)

MicroNexus
MicroNexus: I think we man are intelligent beings. In the depth of our minds we have accepted the fact that nature existed not by our own creation but by "other". (whatever it is.) Nature does has it own complex way of working by itself. Birds are part of nature and their nest are naturally build. We human beings are not part of nature. And out of nature we build things that nature would not othewise produce. To everything that nature would produce by itself, we categorized it under the term "natural". And to the things that existed that would not have been produced naturally, we categorized them under the term "artificial" or Made in Humans and not by "other". Although anything existed is traceable back to its natural stage. We human pride ourself and will give us our own recognition. Not just that, but we also like to simplify life by enhancing the use of our greatest tool which is communication or language. And to do this, we must be specific with everything in existence by asssigning them their own words. While doing so, we take into consideration the fact that nature is not our made. It is made by other for our use. Atleast I think so.

Thatcdnguy eh!
Thatcdnguy eh!: http://www.wireclub.com/Galleries/ViewImage.aspx?ImageId=486608

There is nothing that mankind has ever made that nature cannot compensate for eh...we live in a fragile balance with nature...as we have grown as a species we have pitted ourselves against the natural world many times....in may ways we have won but in others we have lost eh.
For every disease we cure nature finds a new one to take it's place....
Take the simplest form of natural disease eh...the common cold.
Why can we not find a cure for it?
Unless I am wrong(not the first time and it won't be the last)...we cannot find a cure because the cold virus mutates so fast antibiotics do not have a chance to keep up...our natural immune systems tend to fight it off if we are healthy and eat right, all that sort of stuff eh..
Maybe if Science did focus on that alone we might find a cure...but Science is so diversified discovering new ideas and theories across the spectrum of human understanding we cannot focus and should not focus on one thing at a time eh...

Sorry Rod...feeling a little philosophical today eh....

forawhile: With all the procedures we are creating in order to keep looking young, we are pushing science to recreate ourselves according to what we think will survive best in today's world. Certain procedures are "natural" such as the toxin in Botox. Others are artificial, such as what is in Juvederm---the products that fattens up your face so you look younger--I have done all of those because I feel that at the age of 40, I am veering into a danger zone--"OLDER" which is less competitive--in dating---in the work force--I have written about this--I am fighting against it by talking about it--but at the same time I am going with the flow by spending all the money for the procudures--

WonderWoman1: I really like this post
Im a true believer of methaphysics...a naturalists..the study of mind..
so I believe in Natural as well as Artificial Science..
As a methaphysical scientists and naturalists ,I believe that everything in the universe are beyond Science , beyond mind...(if you tap in your consciousness you will see beyond and above things compare to a normal person ...)
everything in this world from plants, humans, liquids are all natural science and everything are made of cells... also I agree with WcAdm...and I know where he's going with this .
anybody seen the movie "Transcendence"?well..
Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions.  His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him...
this movie is all about putting this guy consciousness into a computer...everything from sickness like cancer is cured, even nature flourished, water was pure...he wants to help mankind. .....
what I wanted to say is everything in the universe are Natural Science, it flourished by itself..mankind will die but everything in this world remains the same, the same cycle..
Artificial stuff is good...I wish Im artificial...I dont wanna die..I want to flourish forever like plants..

CoIin: I haven't read through the entire thread, so apologies if this has already been covered, but in response to the opening post on page one, I'd suggest we have a simple case of equivocation, that is, surreptitiously switching from one meaning to another.

Natural, like so many other words, lends itself to various meanings or interpretations. Two of them are relevant to us here:-

1. That which is not artificial, i.e. that which is not a human ARTIFACT.
2. That which is not supernatural.

These are my own definitions. Let's call them N1 and N2. Now let's re-examine the opening paragraph with these two definitions in mind and try to pinpoint the equivocation.

"I honestly take issue with that definition [i.e. the N1 definition]. Why should things made by man be considered not-natural? Didn't we spawn from nature the same way as everything else? [Granting this assumption, then human origins are indeed natural - but N2, not N1] As agents of nature, constructed by nature through natural selection, why for example, are our buildings considered not-natural while most people would say a bird's nest is natural?"

Is a bird's nest natural? Yes, it is both N1 and N2.
Are our buildings natural? N1 - no. N2 - yes.

Our buildings can indeed be considered natural, but only N2 natural. When we contrast a building with a bird's nest, though, we must remain consistent - we mustn't switch from one meaning to another halfway through our analysis.

Are birds nests and buildings both natural? Yes, but only if we adopt N2. Neither of them is supernatural. But that's not really the contrast people are making, is it? People are telling us birds' nests are N1 natural but buildings are not N1 natural.

It's no good to say : "Birds' nests are natural [N1], and humans and their buildings are natural [N2] too. So they're ALL natural."

That's cheating!!

For my next trick, watch me prove that these plastic flowers in that vase over there are supernatural >>>

1. These flowers are artificial.
2. This is identical to saying these flowers are not natural.
3. That which is not natural is supernatural.
4. Therefore these flowers are supernatural.

harlett anathema: ...??????

so Natural human intelligence involves hunting gathering forming social communities & Artificial Human Intelligence is any knowledge memorized from books or degrees earned from those books..

does that mean natural time is morning noon evening and midnight & artificial time is 2 am or 3 pm..6:30 whether am or pm....

WonderWoman1: I think human knowledge is endless harlett...its billion of cells 10% is only used by humans.
take for example the universe, the earth, people, animals...all the same creation cells inter connected.like music....its created by an intelligent design..
I doubt if Scientists created it...and who created them?...its beyond human thinking...even books or scholars dont know...

harlett anathema: you mean humanities capacity ta take on knowledge don't ya......after of course those in charge of managing the masses decide what will be TAUGHT....

did you miss my point on natural & artificial..?????

are You trying in some crafty manner ta prove "the Existence of God" as the Creator through science

have you mixed up Our individual Human Spirits with Our individual physical Brain....?????

are you by chance asking who created"god".....as if Existence & Nature had nothing what so ever ta do with WHAT EXISTS where & However it does...

if you understood the ways of the devil, then your aware he distracts the mind...God hasn't asked the first Human Being ta try and prove His existence while telling Him where He Himself came from..

meanwhile when ever those who take it upon themselves try and prove that where from or disprove that Existence.. they are faced with Existence & Nature Being in perfect Universal Harmony...
