Apokalupto: Why do we have the names Matthew Mark Luke and John attributed to the 4 canonical gospels?

Apokalupto: The early church fathers are unanimous that:
The Gospel of Matthew was written by the Apostle Matthew.
The Gospel of Mark was written by Mark, the interpreter of Peter.
The Gospel of Luke was written by Luke, the companion of Paul.
The gospel of John written by the apostle John.

Tertullian in north Africa 160-220 AD Against Marcion 4.2.1-2

“The gospels were written by the Apostles Matthew and John and apostolic men of Luke and Mark.” - Tertullian

St. Irenaeus wrote in what is today, France 140-200 AD Against Heresies 3.1.1-2

“Matthew wrote among the Jews in their own style while Peter and Paul were preaching in Rome.
Mark, the disciple of Peter, handed to us the preaching of Peter.
Luke, the companion of Paul, set forth a Gospel.
Later, John the disciple of the Lord, put out a Gospel while residing in Ephesus.”
- St. Irenaeus

Clement of Alexandria Egypt 150-215 Adumbrationes in Epistolas Canonicas on 1 Peter 5:13

“The gospels with the genealogies came first.
Mark was done at request of Peter’s preaching in Rome.
John came last with the urging of friends.” - Clement of Alexandria

Muratorian fragment 170 AD Is a list of an early canon.

“At which nevertheless he was present and so he placed them in his narrative the third book of the Gospel is that according to Luke, the well known physician.
The fourth Gospel is that of John, one of the disciples. To his fellow disciples and bishops, who had been urging him [to write]…”

Papias in Hierapolis 125 AD Ecclesiastical History 3.39.15-16

“This too the elder used to say, Mark who had been Peter’s interpreter, wrote down carefully, but not in order, all that he remember of the Lords sayings and doings. For he had not heard the Lord himself or been one of his followers, but later, as I said, one of Peter’s. Peter used to adapt his teaching to the occasion without making a systematic arrangement of the Lord’s sayings, so that Mark was quite justified in writing down some things just as he remembered them. For he had one purpose only-to leave out nothing that he had heard, and to make no misstatement about it.
There is no other tradition that attributes authorship to anyone else.” - Papias

edmund_carey: It is also a striking fact that we have no tradition of the Gospels having been written by anyone other than Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. No ancient source or early manuscript suggests that.

Aspect212
Aspect212: My only disagreement would be your claim that the Gospel of John was written by a disciple of John. This Gospel claims to have been written by the Apostle John.

"This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true." (John 21:24).

Aspect212
Aspect212: Recent research into the Dead Sea Scrolls has caused some scholars to date the Gospel of John before A.D. 70. (See Gutherie, New Testament Introduction: The Gospel and Acts, pp. 261-262). The liberal scholar, John A.T. Robinson dated John as early as 40-65. (Robinson, Redating the New Testament, p. 352).

edmund_carey: Guesses as to the dates of the canonical Gospels come and go all the time, but I'm not sure what the Dead Sea Scrolls would have to do with it. All scholars, as far as I know, date all of them to before the time of Christ.

Apokalupto: We know who wrote them and we know that they were written in the first century. Whether its 10 years off or not really isn't that important as Christians, but scholars like debating that sort of thing.
