chronology
chronology: Zan. Today you have Lesbian Clergy married to other Lesbian lovers serving in churches, you cannot possibly claim modern religion, and the clergy are not reflecting modern society.

The public just see religious people as mentally dysfunctional inadequate people who just cannot interpret their surroundings properly. One reason at least why atheists feel completely superior to such people.

Zanjan: I wasn't saying modern clergy are NOT reflecting modern society - I was saying Christians are not reflecting ancient society.

I realize you don't want to talk about this so just ignore it if it bothers you:

Today, I read something shocking - it was in a local church bulletin; that 1 in 6 women in the church have had an abortion. No other information was supplied, which I took as rather thoughtless.

You know, if they'd had it prior to becoming Christian, or maybe it was a Doctor's decision in a life/death medical issue, I could understand; if not, those stats are disgusting. They were calling for members of the congregation to be supportive with their post natal grief.

That's how much they care about right and wrong. I've got no sympathy for that!!

You have a point though - I've known atheists who wouldn't reduce themselves to such wishy washy positions. However, thinking one's self to be superior to others would likely be worse than an abortion if not for that fact that self-righteous attitudes can be rectified.

Zanjan: I don't think modernization is the problem - remember Sodom and Gomorrah. We're not quite sure what all went on then but it was nasty.

Western society is swamped in severe materialism that triggers a high rate of self-entitlement.....and selfies. Ours is a world of historically unique privilege, comfort and instant everything. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against those things but to every advantage is a disadvantage.

The more convenience, the lazier and more impatient we become. We need real incentive to fight that inertia. We might only see it during a power failure.

Our godless society has become so because our parents and their parents before them lost their grip. Now, the media has it, snowballing paranoia, scandal and sanctioning unbridled liberties. People have become desensitized. In a godless society, the inhabitants know no other world. Introducing them to another makes you look crazy.

chronology
chronology: Zan, some would disagree with you strongly there. They would tell you America began turning into 'doo lally land' when the Religious Right took over the GOP in 1980. The Right Wing religious crowd are probably nice enough people, but outside the comfort zone of mental institutions they can get themselves into all kinds of problems. What the Dems need to do is try simple common sense as an antidote for all the snake handling and poison drinking. Then again, the Dems do face a challenge, any groups that drink strichnine and play with rattle snakes have a leg up on the evolutionary trail if you get what I mean.

Zanjan: I'm not focused on the seedy world of politics - here today, gone tomorrow, then round about again. I don't pay attention to flying rocks, like the stock market, sports teams, or to what the cops and movie stars are doing. Ok, asteroids.....those are interesting.

I look to the good things people want to achieve, to the strides they're making towards intellectual maturity, to preservation of integrity of honour, and re-orienting the stewardship of the planet with a view to the effect on generations in the future.
I look at development....at new things.

The world desperately needs unity - my eyes are on avenues to achieve that critical bond.
