The key word here is "synthetic"...the next word to look for is "industry" The scientist says he built a bacterial genome from scratch - in truth, he copied it, manipulated a few strands, then injected the concoction into an already living cell. He called it a "designer organism" - a euphemism for making spare parts for living things from a 3-D printer.
