Religion is the Biggest Joke on the Planet

Metaverseguy: Go read a page of memes about religion and you will see that it is the most absurd, ridiculous, stupid invention by a bunch of illiterate pre-modern superstitious twats and why most of them only gained followers by threatening villages on pain of death to convert.

Why it's still popular in industrial countries and uneducated regions is still absolutely surprising to me. Probably 70% or more of the people on the planet have access to the Internet and the entire encyclopedia yet claim they believe in God.

Metaverseguy: Einstein said "I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it."

He had different thoughts about god during his lifetime, clearly going from religious to atheist many times. Whatever he thought doesn't really matter; he was human so he made mistakes and is notorious for being a bad student who flunked classes during highschool and was not even respected as a scientist until months after he submitted his theory of relativity, barely scraping by as a patent clerk.

The rise of the 'Religious Right' has been a disturbing aspect of American Politics. The modern Religious Right is said to have it's roots in the aftermath of Barry Goldwater's defeat in 1964 to LBJ. Republicans knew they were facing a Democratic Party that clearly represented the interests of middle class America. So how do you get sensible people, mostly anyway, to vote for candidates who will undermine their best interests? The answer was to break the solidarity within Democrat Voters and convince some Democrats that religion was more important than their jobs, public services, civil rights, and that GOP candidates were the most 'religious candidates' hey presto you have the 'religious right' .

After the 'Battle of Chicago which saw the Democrats commit suicide in 1968 there was no need to mobilise the religious, but with Mr Reagan the 'New Right' was working hard. And for George H Bush, the New Right was pushing the Gospel of the Holy GOP. There was a precinct by Precinct take over of GOP factions by the Holy Rollers who contributed to Mr George W Bush's victory in 2000.

Not all GOP members agree with this mind numbing religious speel peddled by the New Right. One long serving GOP lady walked out of the Party saying 'the once proud GOP has become a religious cult' .

So religion is no joke in America just a useful and very divisive tool used by some cynical people.

Will middle America ever break free of this spell cast by wizards of illusion and again realize their best interests lie with the Democrats and not some bizarre Hybrid GOP? 2016 will show.

Metaverseguy: chronology that's some pretty heavy research there. yea people claim they are religious when they aren't, except so many verses are contradictory that almost anyone can be devout with enough hail mary's. I particularly like the hypocrisy of John Edwards proselytizing meanwhile he had a child out of wedlock. I don't think they can do any real harm since no one takes them very seriously although I would be a little worried if the president said god talks to him during his sleep or promised Jesus would return any day now.

ghostgeek: Politicians espouse religion to curry favour. Priests indulge in politics to preserve privilege. The public gets taken for a ride by both. Some things never change.

ghostgeek: The point is that we just don't know. Whether it makes sense or not, we cannot assume that existence makes sense. We either know or we don't, and at this point in time we don't.

chronology: Lori, the very challenging aspect of the life of Jesus is His actions such as walking on water and floating up into the sky, and, most of all returning to life after being dead three days. For those of us who have spent our lives studying the Occult we would find these actions of Jesus exceptional, but not impossible. But the average person would find such reports to be ridiculous to say the least.

chronology: Reports of Saints floating around are not really reliable Lori. But even the enemies of Jesus conceded He performed miracles. They simply concluded He was using evil powers.

ghostgeek: Jesus performed miracles? You mean like walking on water? People twigged that one long ago. Notice how in the story there is a strong wind blowing and it is night. Then remember that the boat with the disciples in was heading north. Logically then the disciples would have kept close to shore, both to reduce the distance they needed to travel, and to act as a guide in the dark. As we know, a phenomenon called wind setdown can reduce the surface level of a body of water when a strong wind blows, so it's easy to envisage the disciples boat grounding under the circumstances. They could row and row but go nowhere, and because it was dark and the lake surface was choppy, they could be unaware of their predicament.

So along the shore of the lake comes Jesus and he sees the disciples going nowhere. "Funny," he thinks to Himself so He steps into the water to get a closer look. Well, because of the effect of the wind setdown, He finds Himself paddling in shallow water so continues walking towards the boat. Seems He just about got to it when the wind started to die down. Lucky, because as the wind dropped the level of the water would have begun to rise again. So it was a quick heave-ho into the boat for Jesus and off they all rowed.
