Religious Insanity (Page 8)

Zanjan
Zanjan: "that's their own fault?"

It was the fault of sloppy, thoughtless people. Notice not all the cranes fell - someone was clearly asleep at the wheel. Normally, construction sites are banned to all but the workers, and workers have supervisors to reduce hazards on the job.

Geoff: Yes, but the majority of those who died where not responsible for the maintenance or use of the crane.

Geoff: I am somewhat flabbergasted.

I wouldn't have thought that someone who claimed to believe in god could be honestly so callous.

Zanjan: They were all responsible for their own choices. Knowing the record of low saftey during the hajj, all those who go know they're risking their own life to do it. Yet they still do because they think making the pilgrimage is worth risking their life for. I don't have a problem with those people. I made pilgrimage myself - happy to dodge bombs and bullets; it was worth it, even if I didnt survive.

I take issue with the hosts, who were not very hospitable.

I enjoyed watching the quick switch from 'god thinning the herd of unbelievers with his mighty hand' to 'it's their fault and shit happens'.

Zanjan: Ghost, God protects the spirit, not the body.......except in cases where He has a special job for a certain soul to complete. In that case, they can't die until that destiny is fulfilled.

ghostgeek: Zanjan, from my perspective that is just twaddle. You can't show that anyone's spirit has been protected but I can show that plenty of bodies have been broken. All the evidence points to the conclusion that God is an illusion.

Zanjan: Heroes and truth tellers don't have broken spirits....if they get hurt, they quickly heal.

Whereas, the broken die long before their bodies do.

ghostgeek: So some people are strong enough to overcome difficulties that break others. That proves only one thing, that some people are strong enough to overcome difficulties that break others.

zeffur: Prayer is good. So is sound medical treatment--but, it should never be used to force a person to accept a treatment that they don't want--unless they are obviously out of their mind insane--like walking around incoherently naked in public or harming themselves or others.

There are many people who get cancer that weigh the risks & choose not to accept cancer treatment because they don't want to suffer from the treatment that isn't likely to save them. That should always be their choice. No one should be able to declare such a person is out of their mind & force cancer treatment upon them.

If a person doesn't want anyone else's blood for whatever reasons, they should be able to refuse it & their MD should comply with their wishes. The idea that some MD should have the right to over-rule such a person's conscious decision is outrageous, because the person's right to choose what healthcare they want should always be above whatever ANYONE else 'thinks' is best for them. No MD should be given the right to impose her/his healthcare decisions on ANY patient that makes such a conscious decision.

TheismIsUntenable: Prayer is a joke. It's a do-nothing-and-hope-for-the-best approach.

This is mostly about protecting children from their parents' bad decisions. Cletus thinks Jesus will save his kid from a venomous snake bite through prayer. Need a way to save the kid from Cletus's stupidity.

Now if Cletus wants to deny treatment for his snake bite, OK sure no problem. Die for your stupidity.
