Which is more damaging for humanity and civilisation, Islam or Catholicism? (Page 3)

dbromling
dbromling: I think that the question in itself is posed in such a way that any response will be purely opinion and bias which is a major reason both religions are damaging to humanity and civilization in the first place. It generalizes and simplifies the situation but there is no simple answer for it. I think a better question would be if all religion was more damaging or beneficial to humanity and civilization but thats aside the point. Whether the religion is Catholicism, Islam, Judaism, or Buddhism, they are at their core, meant to do good and better humanity. Any damaging or negative outcomes from any religion is all to blame on the human interpretation and intolerance. The tendency for people to group entire peoples together based on their religion is a huge reason for such damaging outcomes. To say "is Catholicism more damaging" is throwing all Catholics into one basket when in reality there are so many different tiers and peoples in that religion. We have this tendency of umbrellaing situations/peoples/religions, so when a "catholic" does something horrible, all of Catholicism suffers. When a Muslim becomes a suicide bomber, even if he belongs to a small radical sect of Islam, the whole religion is thrown under the bus and declared evil and damaging. People are what cause damage to humanity and civilization, not religion. You can look at religion as the gun, but its still the person holding the gun that decides how to use it.

chronology: Bdromlinh It seems more or settled that when any religion takes hold of a society you can kiss goodbye to even basic human rights and civil rights.

One of the most reassuring points about religion is that they for the most part only harm members of their particular sect, and for that we can all be grateful.

chronology: Just did some checking to see if the Ugandan cult leaders had been arrested yet, it seems not need.

' The movement for the restoration of the Ten commandments ' were a fundamentalist cult based on supposed visions of the Virgin Mary.

Nearly a thousand people were murdered by the cult when their end of the world prediction never happened in 2000. They probably thought they could ride out the disappointment like other Christian groups who prophesied the end of the world. But hey Ugandans are down to earth people and they wanted their money back. This sealed their fate. Church members who wanted their money returned were called in to have an ' interview ' the interview was nothing but a trap. Church members were strangled, poisoned, or just clubbed to death.

Then one day people in the neighbourhood of the church saw a huge fireball coil up into the sky and found 500 dead church members in ruins of a church booby-trapped with gasoline.

Ugandan Authorities still have active arrest warrents for the cult leadership.

The Authorities in Uganda are insistent that this be seen as cold blooded murder not mass suicide.

fanara55: Of course you are correct. Christian teaching is not the same as Christian practice. But a true Christian believer would not retaliate by bombing a Mosque or hurting his Muslim neighbours. Self-defence is permissible.

fanara55: When it comes to dangerous religions, the American 'religious right' must rank highly. They are enhtusiasts for capital punishment, unrestricted gun ownership, extreme homophobia....you name it. Christianity is supposed to be a religion of peace, forbearance. and brotherly love.
More broadly, all religions have been infected by delusions and negativities and exhibit an inability to look at persons and events in a dispassionate manner.
