The Serpent told the truth, God lied.

ghostgeek
ghostgeek: When the Serpent asks Eve if she can eat of every tree of the garden she replies that she can except the tree in the middle of the garden because "God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die". To this the Serpent replies "Ye shall not surely die". History proved the Serpent correct. Adam and Eve did not die when they ate of the Tree of Knowledge. It was not because they sinned that they were expelled from the Garden of Eden but because God feared they would take of the Tree of Life and gain immortality. "And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever." Adam and Eve were created mortal and did not die when they broke God's commandment. God lied.

lol yes god is a trickster it's been proven over and over again but that's mainly due to contamination from his brief encounter with his personal moriarty a/k/a beezlebub a/k/a lucifer a/k/a satan.

as to the metaphysical, existential, highly symbolic, quasi-mystical content of the blog, wanda has this to say:

"god speaks of course in riddles and with frequent use of killer metaphors that would stump even the greatest of our literary lights. when god says "die" he means ten thousand things, none of which is clear and the famous expulsion from the garden is equally if not more ambiguous due to the multitude of possible interpretations.

wanda used to break her brain over these issues until finally she realized that god will always win despite his continual use of unfair and illegitimate tactics to keep our species on the edge of our seats.

having reached the ripe old age of 95 she has relaxed her cerebral cavity and now rests in her favorite white buxtahide recliner chair, martini shaker at the ready, and contents herself with not knowing what the hell is going on.

thanx for a truly thought provoking blog ghostly !!

Telling them they would die to me means they became fascinated with the physical world, forgot who they were, would make mistakes, and therefore physically die (their bodies)---which wouldn't have happened if they weren't obsessed with the physical world and wanted to experience it.

Ms_Mafdet_The Great: " Conceiving nothing is impossible unto thyself, think thyself deathless and able to know all - all arts, all sciences, the way of every life.
Become more lofty than all height, and lower than all depth. Collect into thyself all senses of [all] creatures - of fire, [and] water, dry and moist. Think that thou art at the same time in every place - in earth, in sea, in sky; not yet begotten, in the womb, young, old, [and] dead, in after-death conditions.
And if thou knowest all these things at once - times, places, doings, qualities, and quantities; thou canst know God.
21. But if thou lockest up thy soul within thy body, and dost debase it, saying: I nothing know; I nothing can; I fear the sea; I cannot scale the sky; I know not who I was, who I shall be - what is there [then] between [thy] God and thee?"

crunch1004: somehow I always wonder about this too. like why would God create us all to live the life within all the options and ways that could possibly mislead us. is it because God is the greatest of all? but does that mean God actually enjoys giving tricky trick and so forth. is God so playful? is it possible that I could not ever understand God's sense of humor or what? because in my head it's all like a great supercilious feeling that eventually makes non sense

diolover71: The serpent and the tree of knowledge is a reference to enlightenment.Death doesn`t mean a physical death;it is the loss of illusion. When there is no illusion, there is no pleasure and therefore no delight in existence. The Egyptians( on crowns),the Greeks(caduceus),the Hindus(kundalini)as well as other cultures use the serpent as a representation of the rising energy(chi, kundalini, light) from fasting, celibacy, meditation. It also states in the bible;"why should thou make thyself overly wise, why should thy kill thyself".~Ecclesiastes 7:16

bonzono5: true, the bible can mean anything you want, all you have to do is contrive it to buggery.
that way, you can condescend the literalists for not making the same arbitrary contrivances you've made, and berate them for not understanding the ad hoc and entirely fabricated god you've created and which exists uniquely and solely in your mind.

ghostgeek: Who or what was the Serpent in the Garden of Eden? Most people, I think, consider it a snake that was possessed by Satan. That is why it could talk. But could all the animals in the garden talk? You won't find an answer to this question in the Bible but if you look elsewhere you will. The Book of Juilees, chapter 3, verse 28 says:

"And on that day was closed the mouth of all beasts, and of cattle, and of birds, and of whatever walks, and of whatever moves, so that they could no longer speak: for they had all spoken one with another with one lip and with one tongue."

The implication is clear, the serpent was not alone in having the ability to speak. It therefore seems reasonable to assume it was a snake, a conclusion reinforced by its punishment; "upon they belly shalt thou go." It would have been unjust for God to have punished all snakes in this way if one had been possessed by Satan, after all. Snakes were considered a symbol of wisdom, fertility, and immortality in the ancient world. And the bible does say that "The serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made."

ghostgeek: Mmmm....I see Rabbi Fohrman also states the Serpent told the truth. Whatever its motives it didn't deceive. Why though, if God didn't want Man to eat of the Tree of Knowledge, why plant it in the first place? This would suggest that God deliberately put temptation in front of Adam and Eve. Did He also send the Serpent to entice Eve? Was this the divine plan all along? It makes me wonder if anybody has really enquired into the divine mind. The story of the creation only tells us how God made everything, it doesn't go into the reason why.
