orkanen: assegayer: I asked you, as a Muslim, to provide me with a verse stating the lower age limit for marriage and consummation in Islam, the verse you gave me is from the divorce chapter, stating how long a female has to wait until she can remarry, wether she no longer has menstruation, or if she's pregnant, or if she's too young to have menstruation to begin with. How do you fit that with a lower age limit, other than that there is none in that verse?

lavendar_star: Yes so true, its hard to debate with some religious folk and its hard not to be dismissive of them either. That is a great way of explaining it, that's my fav movie the matrix

assegayer expecting us to take his word based on a book that has been discredited for its accuracy as has the bible but any reasonable questions or rational views from us is ignored. I am tempted to post videos by Richard darkins he is quite hardcore.

Tarynn: Orkanen & Lavendar, thanks for your clarification of the desert dogma and its implications on the modern world.

I see that you have been busy banging your heads against the wall, too. Somebody's skull density can obviously be measured in feet rather than inches...

So we're back to the old game of trying to convert each other by the threat of judgment day and eternal hell now, are we? What a waste of time and effort!

Newsflash: No religion is really better than all the others, just different!

orkanen: Tarynn: I'm enjoying myself, while trying to nudge people in direction of enlightenment. I've actually managed to turn two people so far, when they finally realize that I'm not attacking them personally, but their dogma. That is, one Mormon and one Pentecoastal follower. Islam is tougher, as you don't only think Islam, you also eat, pee and shit Islam. Whatever you do, you do it the Muslim way. Getting out of that mindset is extremely difficult.

As it is, religious people are taught all their lives to not question their religion, that everything in their religion is "good", no matter how bad it really is. When bringing up the most perverse parts of a religion, I point out that there is nothing good in that part, regardless of how you twist it. I don't claim that religions are only bad, but, as an Atheist, I can live the good parts and discard the bad parts. I am not bound to crazy ceremonies, I can eat all available food, I don't need an enemy to shift my lack of self esteem onto.

The ones who get out of religion are those who manage to become honest with themselves, reflecting on what they have been taught, in light of reality. It's a difficult task, and not many have the guts to go through it, go against their families, their friends, their community.

chesney: Not only that, Orkanen, even if they realise that they have been living a lie for several decades, they are also afraid to suffer a personal humiliation in the form or utter disbelief and the feeling that the ground is opening up like a gaping hole underneath their entire life, threatening to engulf everything they formerly stood for.

To some people, admitting that their faith is worthless is actually even worse than gays coming out of the closet after a life-long cover-existence, sometimes including having had both kids and grandkids.

Instead, they tend to withdraw to a defensive position and like a wounded animal, they resort to attacking their opponents with unkind means, including threats of doom and gloom in a speculative hereafter. To everybody but themselves, it's obvious that they behave in an irrational and dishonest way, but they refuse to admit it, even to themselves, often to such a degree that ridiculous is not a strong enough expression. It's really sad to see, because unlike some hardline anti-religionists (also on this forum) I don't take any personal pleasure in seing theists suffer, even though it would probably benefit their sound judgment in the long run, when push comes to shove and they find out what kind of materials their personality is really made of.

When I first joined Wireclub, I spent some time reading through old threads and I found a few prime examples of the specimen that we are describing here. It makes a good insight into the human psyche with regards to religious influences and their ability to paralyze our ability to produce critical thoughts, particularly self-criticism, which seems to be completely absent from many religionists' mental properties.

Tarynn: Orkanen wrote >>>Tarynn: I'm enjoying myself, while trying to nudge people in direction of enlightenment.

LOL Some kind of lifetime achievement you have assumed there, buddy! Particularly since most of them are so blinded by dogmatic shades that they never see the enlightenment you refer to. That leaves them in a black spot for the rest of their lives, unless a remedy is found in the form of the willingness to see the world through clear lenses.
