A moral universe? (Page 3) oh_good_laughs: YHWH, who's Son is Jesus Christ. For in the beginning was the WORD, and the WORD was with God, and the WORD was God. .. the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us. CoIin: You mean the one that ordered Abraham to murder his son? I'm told it was a test of faith. But doesn't that god know everything? Why would he need to test? Anyway, he sounds like a nasty piece of work. Any others?
CoIin: A question for all. If your neighbor told you he had been commanded by God to kill his son and was making preparations to do just that, what would you do? Praise his faith? This is the problem with certainty. How sure are you that that voice is God? Sure enough to kill? oh_good_laughs: hm Colin, if that's the case you would have to say that about anyone who lived in that era.. You might as well say, every human was a nasty work, uncivilized, murderous. But keep in mind, the worst wars of mankind have been fought recently by the so-called civilized countries. So pointing a finger leaves 3 more pointing back at you. God never promises that we won't face hardships. That we won't face death, murder, abuse, etc. The "wise man's house" got rained on too. What God DOES promise is an assurance within these thing. To be there with us as we face these challenges. oh_good_laughs: If you do not believe in God, why do you devote time discussing it?, Your wasting valuable time you know CoIin: "You might as well say, every human was a nasty work, uncivilized, murderous" Um, I was referring to Yahweh, not Abraham. CoIin: Anyway, since the topic is morals, let me ask you Risen. If you were commanded to kill your son/brother/whatever by God, would you? It certainly wouldn't be the first time. Most of the killers didn't make the Bible though, just prison, or a mental asylum. CoIin: Yes, I enjoy studying religion from the outside too. Just as the person who is madly in love often has a distorted picture of the object of his/her love, I think religious people often fail to see (or refuse to see) what is blindingly obvious to an outsider. When your heart's on fire, smoke gets in your eyes...... oh_good_laughs: As I went down in the river to pray Studying about that good old way And who shall wear the starry crown Good Lord, show me the way ! oh_good_laughs: O Colin let's go down, Let's go down, come on down, Down in the river to pray Good Lord, show us the way ! CoIin: River? How about the Rivers of Babylon. I love the bit about smashing children's skulls at the end.... By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. 2 There on the poplars we hung our harps, . . . Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is the one who repays you according to what you have done to us. 9 Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks. Psalm 137 (Edited by CoIin) CoIin: I'm not trying to be flippant here. The topic is morals. What on Earth are we doing in this day and age still venerating a book which includes and even encourages such atrocities? Yes, there's nice stuff in the Bible, but there's an awful lot of morally repugnant stuff too. Why don't we just keep the nice stuff and bury the nasty stuff in a very deep pit? Oh wait.... I think most Christians already do. (Edited by CoIin) oh_good_laughs: the love of God, is on that cross Colin. Jesus took your sin, and my sin, upon himself on that cross. Colin, Jesus' arms is spread far enough on that cross to forgive you of anything evil you have ever done. | Religion Chat Room 33 People Chatting Similar Conversations |
