Which truth? (Page 14) Circle of Life: the truth is, a carrot cake with spices, dried fruits, hot pepper cubes, and 4200 taster.. Coffrey: When all religions have equal evidence for their claims and are incompatible, why believe the silly nonsense at all? budwiser: I don't, but I know that some people do it because they think that "the silly nonsense" contains some truth that they would like to pursue. New question: Do all religions contain an equal amount of truth? Why/why not? Which one is truer then the rest and what do you base that assumption upon? (Edited by budwiser) Coffrey: I would say the only reason someone follows a religion, born into or converted to, is that it agrees with their own morality or truth or whatever, before joining up, it already agrees with their sensibilities. Like if a religion says women are inferior and you can beat your wife, some guy who wants to beat his wife would be more inclined to that religion
budwiser: So, in your opinion, religion is a justification for - or a legitimation of - your own preferences, next to being a place to meet likeminded and agitate in favour of your collective opinions? Coffrey: I would say so, but only for the converted. I mean, I can imagine that someone who loves beer and hot dogs would ever be a Muslim or a Jew, so those are dealbreakers, regardless of the whole "you might go to hell for the wrong god". No one really believes this shit, and the ones that do usually do something that gets them killed or taken to prison or otherwise out of the gene pool of our species, so hence those "there absolutely is a god" genes die out budwiser: Also, with better enlightenment comes an increased degree of sound skepticism that our ancestors lacked, I think. They trusted religion more than proven facts, because there wasn't so many of them around during their time. Now, the tendency seems to be that facts disprove religion one splinter at a time. | Religion Chat Room 35 People Chatting Similar Conversations |
