United Kingdom is just asking for it (Page 9) The13th: Ok Whisky I save you a bit of time down the wrong track. Actually if you read carefully from the beginning, I merely point out that it seems to me only some British colonies tend to develop into a good democracy. Not all, but some. No I never read any books about this ...it just that I get older ..older ...older ...older ..... and then I start to see why in our region ...nearby countries never did "well". While we are enjoying peace and growth, about 500 miles away fighter jet took off on US aircraft carrier pounding Ho Chi Minh city, riot in Indonesia, some IndoChina countries remains poor to these days after colonial power has long gone. Myannmar is an exception running by some military. So I just thought has this got something to do with how British run their colonies. Have they gave us a system that somehow weather the test of time? I dont really know, of course, my ignorance at play again. May be you can point to some Spanish or Duch or French colonies and say see they do well too. Then my hypothesis will crumble. Also it does not matter good democracy or not .... I dont think anyone wake up everyday feeling proud of a government. Life are just hard for working class before or after the British Empire. A bus driver in London and a bus driver in India or Malaya probably all have to wake up at 5am in the morning to run the first bus to pickup workers to work. Non of this workers will think oh Queen Victoria is so glorious now I get to be a bus driver or a factory hands. A democracy probably only means we get to work everyday, instead of staying at home because some military coup or crowd riot has stopped the normal running of the nation. (Edited by The13th) WHlSKY: I already addressed this in the first page and presented a few angles that you can approach it at as the surface level comparison is flawed and weak. Pause. And review it over. You have a hypothesis, the next step is to test it without bias. In the first page I showed you how this same hypothesis didn’t add up. The next step is to either (a) squash that hypothesis and start over at another angle based on the findings of the first or (b) start over completely with a new hypothesis. Then test it again against the facts that you can research and find. And even present it publicly here to see who might see a flaw in it and present counter-points. It is work if you are genuinely interested in having your thoughts as accurate as possible and tested. And no, Argentina’s government issues past and present was not due to any documents left behind by colonialists. I also would not like to trade in one coloniser for another. Economically in history Argentina had great highs and lows. It was not stagnant/plateauing. This is not a docile region, historically. People tend to be more aware of politics and history. Ps. For some nonBritish ex colonies “successfully democratic” territories you can check the Caribbean [Curaçao, Aruba, etc] or other areas. However, the success of a country may not mean it is due to the ex colonialiser as we already spoke about with India, who was left at a low position during its many years of colonialism and its government had to make reforms after Independence which resulted in growth. So you will have to dig deeper into what each success was and what actually contributed to it. And the other African example of how it set them back instead of moving them forward. That paper went in depth into the areas that were affected and how it affected their growth. You’ll have to do like that and point exact factors. If you are going by mere numbers you’ll have to check each ex-colony and note that British colonisation covered more countries than the others. Get to work. I hope that you go this route in lieu of the “I don’t know but I think..” and then leaving it there for someone else to correct. Present something as thorough as possible. Don’t rush yourself. I don’t see reason to compare one ex colony with the other, there are too many other factors at play, but this is your interest so proceed and enjoy yourself. The13th: Guys in case if you have not heard, while Boris lost his job .... a few thousand miles towards the east ... a certain ex-PM on an island chain not unsimilar to Britian, actually lost his life. So Boris should be rather please with his lesser misfortunte.
