Why limit political campaign donations?

Lumpenproletariat
Lumpenproletariat: What purpose is served by limiting how much anyone may donate? Why any limits on corporations donating? Why limits on foreigners donating?

All these restrictions seem to serve no practical purpose, but come only from paranoia and delusion.

It would be fine to tax the donations, in order to raise some revenue, but there should be no limits on the donations. All the electioneering can be paid for by these private donations, unlimited, so that less tax money need be spent on campaigns. There is educational value in the campaign spending, with unlimited freedom for everyone to donate to the political propaganda of their choice, including candidates.

Lumpenproletariat: Would someone please give an example how any political campaign donations did harm and so should be limited.

The popular case we hear so much about, CITIZENS UNITED, seems to be about a corporation producing a motion picture which was negative toward Hilary Clinton. Why was it wrong for this company to produce such a motion picture?

What was the harm done to the country by allowing such a company to publish or produce such political propaganda? Isn't anyone else free to publish a rebuttal to this propaganda? to produce their own motion picture to refute the claims made in this one? Why not allow anyone to publish any propaganda they wish, for or against any political party or candidate? regardless who they are, including any corporation or group of any kind?

Why isn't any individual or group or corporation entitled to First Amendment rights to speak or publish anything which is not slander, regardless if it's about a political candidate?

Why should there be any limits on such propaganda or on the spending or donating toward it?

Also, why should FOREIGNERS be prohibited from contributing to such propaganda? or to political campaigns?

Why not, unless you hate foreigners? What is the threat that they pose? Maybe they are affected by the American politics and have a legitimate interest.

Suppose a foreigner calls into a political talk show to express an opinion which could affect voters. Should that be made illegal? Theoretically that could violate the law which says foreigners may not participate. If there's nothing wrong with them calling such a program and influencing someone, then why not let them publish something during the political campaign, promoting a candidate, or promoting an issue to be voted on? Is that permissible?

Why shouldn't they be allowed to donate to a candidate? or to publish their opinion on a political issue or candidate? Why should their freedom of speech and press be suppressed only because it relates to a political campaign?
