Zanjan: Remember that Putin used to be KGB and still is in heart. His aim is to restore the old Soviet Union and make Russia into an even larger empire. He displays classic dictator behaviour - easily predictable:

He snufs his political opposition, sends forces to eliminate a minority (gays and protestors), censors the county's media, spreads propaganda, paints an image of himself as a hero etc. Has festive displays of military power. Uses truces to re-group and rebuild the strength of his army, and hits on the most defenseless neighbour.

Basically, when a leader has trouble running his country, he creates a war to deflect the people's attention away from that weakness. Some of the Ukrainian people are friendly with the Russian people; some of them are even Russians. That gave Putin confidence for a comeback. Those people didn't believe Russia would invade.

Zanjan: Should Putin be successful occupying the Ukraine, he'll be looking at the next country to invade, provided it doesn't have NATO'S protection. A leopard doesn't change its spots. You can be certain Putin has secretly put into place sneaky measures to lash out at the world who would defy him.

The only way to stop a megalomaniac is to expunge him. Good luck waiting for the Russian military to turn against him.

The UN needs to remove Russia's veto power at the Security Council ASAP. Stronger sanctions are necessary but, sadly, those are too slow to prevent carnage, environmental destruction, and inevitable occupation.

Others on here are just like farts in a wind storm finger pointing at this Trump guy and Putin this and that.
Ukraine and Soviet Union aka Russia is a Mother and Daughter relationship dating back 400 years, we are only aware of what is happening over there past 30 years is because of rapid growth of the internet
Nato and the UN have troops in the area for decades, western leaders only want to show their flapping mouths in the media about sanctions and other bullshit. with no intentions of using their own armed forces in combat against Russia.
Why don't Nato forces fight back the Russians troops in Ukraine. Where civilian life's lost
I guess they only had the courage with little powerless nations like Iraq ,Afghanistan .
I can't wait until China walks into neighboring nations
What a joke Nato leaders are

Zanjan: Midget wrote: "Why don't Nato forces fight back the Russians troops in Ukraine."

NATO is a treaty - meaning, all members who've signed on must agree to the rules of the treaty and not break them. The Ukraine wasn't willing to abide by the conditions so it didn't become a member.

I mean, if you look at how God does things; He says to offer them a treaty - if they refuse, bring down the fire and wipe them out. God makes a contract with believers; if they break that covenant, they're ousted from His protection. No excuses.

Maybe the reason the Ukraine didn't join NATO is they were under duress by Russia, who has repeatedly stated for years if the Ukraine joined NATO, Russia would punish them severely. He continues to reiterate that. However, Russia tried to provoke the Ukraine into attacking Russian soldiers but the Ukraine didn't fall for that so Putin used other tactics.

Alternatively, the Ukraine may not have wanted to pay their fair share of membership fees - that is, contributions to military spending which would be 2% of the GDP. They may have thought they could talk their way out as in the past.

Putin had a treaty with the Ukraine - the Minsk Agreements - and broke it. Then justice should come down on him. The problem is that its a UN issue and Russia has a Veto vote on the UN Security Council.

NATO is doing what it can, within the perimeters of its treaty. I think it can call for a no-fly zone over the Ukraine but that's the best it can do for that country. The rest is up to the allies, using other methods, such as the UN recommends, to bring pressure to bear on Putin to draw back.

Zanjan: There's a big difference between having a relationship with NATO and being an actual member. It's kind of like having to finish high school before you can enter university. You can't be a barbarian.

A country must be *eligible* to join NATO; as such, NATO requires a preparation period to establish a cooperative relationship, where it makes recommendations, particularly in respecting human rights, and meeting various other criteria to establish eligibility.

Once screening is completed, NATO will invite the applicant to join NATO as a member. This is the intermediary step in the process of application. Commitment, resourcefulness, perseverance and degree of cooperation will be gauged. Promising countries will be added to the list of participants in the MAP.

The Ukraine began this process in the early 90s but never finished it.

Sir Loin was confusing the participants in the "Membership Action Plan with NATO" as NATO members - not the same thing. The MAP is for aspiring applicant countries. It's like the final step for the rising dancer to be accepted by a famous Ballet company.

Zanjan: There IS talk of Putin breaking the Nuclear Arms Deal and using that "fear" tactic as a sanction against those who've sanctioned him. I don't know if that's just rumour or not.

Seems unthinkable to entertain that notion. Nuclear war heads have an expiration date of 24 years or so - most of its components, like tritium, decay very quickly. They're rather complicated devices - many elements in them will degrade. After this date, there's only a few pounds of fisal material left. To let one of these lose is to sign his country's death warrant.

Putin is 69 years old - the Ukraine will outlive him.

The world has worked hard to laser focus on the regime, to avoid causing harm to the good Russian citizens, who oppose war. However, nobody gets out of this without collateral damage.
