Kojensa: 'Breakthrough finding' reveals why certain Covid-19 patients die - 13 November 2020

In an international study in Science, 10 percent of nearly 1,000 Covid-19 patients who developed life-threatening pneumonia had antibodies that disable key immune system proteins called interferons. These antibodies — known as autoantibodies, because they attack the body itself — weren't found at all in 663 people with mild or asymptomatic Covid-19 infections. Only four of 1,227 healthy patients had the autoantibodies. The study was led by the Covid Human Genetic Effort, which includes 200 research centers in 40 countries.

Research shows Covid-19 patients with life-threatening illness have antibodies that disable key immune system proteins called interferons.

Interferons serve as the body's first line of defense against infection, sounding the alarm and activating an army of virus-fighting genes, said virologist Angela Rasmussen, an associate research scientist at the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health.

"Interferons are like a fire alarm and a sprinkler system all in one," said Rasmussen

Kojensa: I read in a wireclub forum that RAT (rapid antigen test) cannot pick up or test for omicron.

RAT pick up or can test for the current Covid variants such as Alpha, Delta and Omicron, however it cannot differentiate. If a person is tested positive then the person has Covid just doesn't know which variant.

I would assume whatever is currently widespread hence most probably Omicron rather than Alpha or Delta. Of course this is not 100% certain that it is Omicron

Kojensa: The RAT test negative is more likely to be false negative than the false positive. This mean if your RAT test is positive it is more likely is positive and not a false positive although that is possible. And if the the result is negative the possibilities for it to be false negative is more likely. I would take another RAT test a couple days later if still feeling unwell. That is just me and how I do my RAT test

Kojensa: VERIFY: How you might get a false negative from a COVID-19 rapid test - December 2020

How do these antigen tests work?

"When you ask me whether antigen tests are accurate, are they accurate for what purpose?"

Are they an accurate measure of whether someone's infectious with SARS-CoV-2 (Covid)?

Are they a good predictor of whether or not this person will be shedding this virus tomorrow or the next day, because they had an exposure two days ago?

Kojensa: @Jessejo so is Covid, Covid is not safe

Yes Covid vaccines have side effects and can be dangerous to a small percentage of people. These are the people that are unable to be vaccinated and rely on group immunity.

More deaths and hospitalisation from Covid than from its vaccination

Kojensa: If you read past posts I'm not covering mandatory vaccination. I hope people would choose vaccination after looking at the risks and benefits without clouding their decision with fears from misinformation and disinformation.

In any case, countries are opening up and they did so "quite safely" as at least 80% of their population are vaccinated or already had omicron. This is not the ideal 95% vaccination to achieve herd immunity but better than nothing. Letting Covid run it course with no protection, no precautions and no prevention actions would mean higher number of deaths and hospitalisation.

If there is a new deadlier and more contagious Covid variant, which is possible and the number of deaths and hospitalisation keep on increasing I would guess it would be back to square one. That would mean vaccinations and restrictions, lockdown even

Kojensa: BA.2 is like Omicron's sister. Here's what we know about it so far. - 2 Feb 2022

The exact properties of BA.2 are also still being investigated. While there is no evidence so far that it causes more severe disease, scientists do have some specific concerns.

1. It’s harder to differentiate
2. It may be more infectious

The way to address this, of course, is to try to slow transmission and reduce the susceptible pool of hosts in which the virus can freely replicate.

Strategies such as social distancing and mask-wearing, as well as increasing vaccination rates globally, will slow the emergence of new variants and lineages.

When the genetic code of a virus changes as a result of these mutations, it’s referred to as a variant.

A lineage, or sub-variant, is a genetically closely related group of virus variants derived from a common ancestor.

The Omicron variant comprises three sub-lineages: B.1.1.529 or BA.1, BA.2 and BA.3.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classified Omicron a variant of concern on November 26 2021 because of its potential to cause higher reinfection rates, increased transmissibility and reduced vaccine protection.

If changes in the genetic code are thought to have the potential to impact properties of the virus that make it more harmful, and there’s significant transmission in multiple countries, it will be deemed a “variant of interest”.

If a variant of interest is then shown to be more infectious, evade protection from vaccination or previous infection, and/or impact the performance of tests or treatments, it is labelled a “variant of concern”.

The United Kingdom has labelled BA.2 a variant “under investigation”. So not yet a variant of interest or concern, based on WHO definitions, but one that is being watched closely.

Covid is more infectious that is faster and easier to spread than flu. There are more deaths and hospitalisation by Covid than by flu

A UK friend who is against mandatory vaccination told me she practiced all Covid safety and prevention except the vaccination.

Kojensa: Here are 10 steps you can take to help prevent the spread of the Covid, flu and Cold (no vaccine for cold atm)

1) Stay calm. Think carefully about how you can help your community and loved ones.

2) Wash your hands. A lot. Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds and wash often.

3) Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. This helps reduce the chances of you getting sick.

4) Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze. Make sure you use tissues and throw them away in a lined trash can.

5) Stay at home if you’re sick. We want everyone to stay as healthy as possible.

6) If you believe you were exposed to Covid, flu or cold and having a fever, cough, or shortness of breath, call your healthcare provider immediately.

7) Avoid sharing household items. This applies to cups, eating utensils, bedding, and towels.

8) Disinfect objects and surfaces in your home and at work. Use an alcohol-based sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol

9) Sleep well. Your immune system is working best if you are well-rested.

10) Get Covid and flu shot.

Kojensa: England

England's last remaining Covid restriction - the legal requirement to isolate after a positive test - was lifted at the end of February 2022.

England has had a pretty light-touch approach to regulations compared to many places since the summer.

The masks mandate and working from home advice was only reintroduced in late 2021 as the Omicron variant took off.

England has 95% vaccination of over-60s
(those groups most at risk) hence despite the surge in infections caused by the Omicron variant, the number of people dying has been similar to pre Omicron.

There are signs infections may be starting to climb again, but it is causing little concern at the moment.
