danishian: Trump says he condemns all white supremacists including 'Proud Boys'
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-trump-proudboys-idUSKBN26N09B

(Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Thursday he condemned all white supremacists including the “Proud Boys,” an organization identified as a hate group, further walking back comments he made this week that were viewed as emboldening the group.

“I condemn all white supremacists, I condemn the Proud Boys. I don’t know much about the Proud Boys but I condemn that,” Trump told Fox News in an interview.

During the first presidential debate with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden on Tuesday, Trump was asked if he was willing to denounce “white supremacists and militia groups” and tell them to stand down amid violence that has marred anti-racism protests in some U.S. cities.

Trump requested a specific name, and Biden mentioned the Proud Boys, an organization that describes itself as a club of “Western chauvinists” but has been categorized as a hate group by the nonprofit Southern Poverty Law Center.

“Proud Boys, stand back and stand by,” Trump then said. The comment drew wide criticism and was viewed by many to be a sign of encouragement to the group.

Shortly after Trump made the remark in the debate, Proud Boys member Joe Biggs celebrated the group’s mention on the social media platform Parler, saying: “President Trump told the proud boys to stand by because someone needs to deal with ANTIFA...well sir! we’re ready!!”

Antifa is a largely unstructured, far-left movement whose followers broadly aim to confront those they view as authoritarian or racist. Trump called on Biden to condemn Antifa.

On Wednesday, Trump began the process of walking back what he said at the debate. “I don’t know who the Proud Boys are,” he told reporters at the White House. “They have to stand down. Let law enforcement do their work.”

The president has a long history of making comments that his critics view as racist or as supportive of racist groups.

In 2017, he said “both sides” were to blame for violence between white supremacists and counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia. He later sought to walk back the comments.

srbiddy09: David, Trump has a long history of making disturbing remarks like the one he made about the Proud Boys and then "walking them back" a few days later once he realizes that it could damage him politically. What matters to me--and many of Trump's critics--is that his initial response when asked to condemn white supremacist groups was to equivocate and refuse to condemn them. After all, if he honestly didn't know who the Proud Boys were when he was first asked about them, then he should have said something along the lines of "Who are the Proud Boys?" However, he didn't do that--he told them to "stand by." Thus, I believe that Trump's initial response during the debate indicates how he genuinely feels about white supremacist groups.

Of course, this is America and you may disagree with me, but that's ok. We are all entitled to our opinions.

In any case, I would like to applaud you for using a credible and verified news source to back up your argument. There may be hope for you yet.

Have a great Sunday evening!!!!

danishian: Trump just didn't know who the Proud Boys are so why critisize him ,, when he didn't know who they were in the first place.... it is like all of you democrats accussing Trump of violenting his oath of office when you don't know what he did to violate his oath of office. Nancy didn't even know what to impeach trump for even during the impeachment trials... both of them...

srbiddy09: David, I believe that Trump was fully aware of the appeal that his platform had for "fringe" white supremacist groups like the Proud Boys. Moreover, Trump played to that appeal significantly throughout his campaign.

Like I said, if he honestly didn't know who the Proud Boys were on the evening of the debate, he should have said something like, "I am not familiar with the Proud Boys but I denounce all white supremacist groups." Instead, he directed them to "stand back and stand by." That's a very peculiar thing to say to a group if you don't know who they are.

The fact that he walked his comments back a few days later appears more like "damage control" than a genuine disavowal of white supremacist groups.

srbiddy09: David: When Trump was asked during the debate if he was willing to condemn white supremacist groups, he answered "Sure," but then added that "almost everything he sees is from the left wing, not the right wing." When Biden and debate moderator Chris Wallace pressed him further to emphatically denounce "white supremacists" and "the Proud Boys," Trump answered: "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by--but I'll tell you what, I'll tell you what, somebody's got to do something about antifa and the left."

That's hardly seems like an emphatic disavowal of white supremacists--especially compared to the harsh words he has used toward his political "enemies." For instance, Trump has called Joe Biden "Corrupt Joe," and "Beijing Joe," referred to Nancy Pelosi as "MS-13 Lover" and Maxine Waters as "Low IQ Maxine." In other words, Trump rarely minces words when it comes to people he truly doesn't like, so it seems revealing that he would equivocate or act "mealy mouthed" when it comes to denouncing white supremacist groups.

Nevertheless, it is interesting to note that after the debate, many members of the Proud Boys saw Trump's answer as a sign of support and began tweeting about about how the president was on their side. Ultimately, that demonstrates to me this his "condemnation" was anything but clear.
