dashaw12000: Black people deserve reparations for slavery and its aftermath effects on them. Each Black American should get $1million tax-free. Agree?

kittybobo34: I agree, they should get 1 million confederate dollars, and then pay the descendants of the Union solders for risking their lives to save them.

dashaw12000: Well, that's a novel idea. So you're saying that these soldiers were trying to save Blacks in the South? Hmmmm.

kittybobo34: Ending slavery was one of the goals the Union had. However the reparations should come from the Confederacy.

dashaw12000: I totally agree with the Confederates having to cough up the money. They got away with way too much. The slaveholders were paid for losing their slaves at the end of the Civil War. That's nuts!
Yes, ending slavery was one of the goals, but the main one for Lincoln was preserving the union. Not so?

kittybobo34: absolutely.. Its a shame Lincoln was killed. He had a plan to ship free of charge all those that wanted to go back to Africa, Even had a country carved out for them .. Liberia. The ex slaves that made it there turned it into a copy of the old south with plantations, a constitution, and representative Gov.

chronology
chronology: Dash. The United States probably used the Legal model of compensation for slave owner's that Her Majesties Government in Great Britain had used earlier. It was the most expensive legislation that Great Britain had ever drawn up to that date and placed Britain in debt for decades. Such huge loan's were not normal for Government's to take on at the time, so Washington DC was probably just being cautious in it's compensation to slave owner's. Lawmakers would also have found it impossible to to persuade Tax payers in either Britain or America to become liable for such huge debts to hand out money to regular folk's at the time.

Different times, different politics.
