Mass Shootings, what can be done? LaurieDIA: Seems like every week now another mass shooting in the US. They just had one today in Virginia, a disgruntled city employee killed 11 people before police neutralized him. I know gun rights supporters say that people intending to do this sort of harm can get access to firearms regardless of a ban. I myself have a concealed weapons permit because frankly I feel unsafe in some certain areas of the city. To me I think it is definitely an issue with males (sorry guys, love ya but the testosterone is a dual edged sword). So something about society is perhaps setting them off? I hate where things seem to be headed. Does anyone think Internet plays a role? My mom said it was never like this before Internet came to pass. It isn't a black and white issue- Lot of nuance and grey area... You could point to the failure of the mental health care system in America for starters. Aside from jail, there aren't a lot of places for the mentally ill to go any more unless their families have the money to send them to expensive treatment facilities. You could look at how there is a real existential crisis happening in terms of identity and how people are creating meaning in their lives right now... A lot of kids are struggling with feeling like life is completely pointless. They don't get a lot of positive reinforcement and come from broken homes. They're depressed, pissed off and feel like this is the only way they can make a name for themselves... How do we address that problem? And then what about just making it even a tiny bit more complicated for the mentally ill to get a fire arm? I personally know an autistic young man with horrible temper issues who walked in to a flea market in Florida and got himself a gun with zero issues... This is a guy who has lived in group homes. He often doesn't take his meds, and talks about blowing people away when he gets triggered. It shouldn't be that easy for him to get a gun. But you can't say that without having half the country thinking you're trying to take away their rights! Mass shootings on the scale we are seeing now are a new phenomenon, giant. Every other week a school is having a mass shooting. That's not normal. That's never happened with the frequency and scope we are seeing now. Something's gotta give. We need more background checks. And no normal person needs to carry an assault weapon.
