Two groups rose to the top of the civil war: the Republic of China and the communists. The communists were on their last legs when the Japanese invaded in 1939. The communists fled to the mountains, and after six years of war with Japan, the Republic was weakened enough to lose that civil war. The result put Mao Zedong in charge of China. Under his leadership, at least 45 million innocent people were murdered. High-end estimates go up to 200 million.
