ghostgeek: I read an article recently about why young people are getting into debt in such large numbers. It seems that wages haven't been rising to keep pace with aspirations. All those well-paid jobs of yesteryear seem to be disappearing like snow on a hot day. Strange, considering that we're always being told that A.I. will bring with it a tidal wave of brilliant jobs.

kittybobo34: Yep,, with the demise of the middle class goes the good paying jobs. THings are going back to the late 1800's and early 1900's when there was only the rich and legions of poor. It took higher taxes and Rosevelts new deal to create the middle class

chronology: People cannot predict the future with much accuracy. The folks who built modern America were families who traveled the Oregon Trail. Most of those fine folks could not speak English. They struggled along dirt roads. Their mind's were shaped in Norway Germany Sweden. They had no Idea they were the foundation of the Nation you see today called the USA.

Curiously, the prized consumer items they desired were a piano and an encyclopedia. Good people.

ghostgeek: Maybe, just maybe, travelling to the stars won't be a lunatic undertaking, at least for robots:

A NASA scientist has cooked up plans for a bonkers new rocket engine that can reach close to the speed of light — without using any fuel.

Travelling at such speeds, the theoretical machine could carry astronauts to Mars in less than 13 minutes, or to the Moon in just over a second.

However, the real purpose of the so-called “helical engine” would be to travel to distant stars far quicker than any existing tech, according to NASA engineer Dr David Burns.

Dr Burns, from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Centre in Alabama, unveiled the idea in a head-spinning paper posted to NASA’s website.

“This in-space engine could be used for long-term satellite station-keeping without refuelling,” Dr Burns writes in his paper.

“It could also propel spacecraft across interstellar distances, reaching close to the speed of light.”

kittybobo34: Ghost,, Don't hold your breath on that engine. It only theoretically works at Light speed. So don't count all the fuel it would take to get it up to speed in the first place.

chronology: Sorry Guys but light speed is still a definite impossibility. All you have to do is hit something as big as a dime and your ship would be blown to smitherines. Gone, kaptnick, vamoosed into a million pieces.
NASA and possibly Russia almost certainly have Anti Gravity engines of some kind. But these engines are most likely calibrated to the earth's gravity. Until NASA can develop some kind of system for protection of fast moving space Craft there will be no high speed long distance space travel. For humans or robot's.

Virtually every Space commentator now see Robot's as the only practical crews for long range Space journeys. But NASA is still committed to the human venture in Space. They insist human presence in Space is vital for mankind's experience as a species.

chronology: Ghost, really Old Chap, we are talking about machine's. They don't have emotions of any kind. But as AI begins to reach super high levels of Intelligence most Lawmakers are beginning to be lobbied by folks who think they should have Rights like any other American.

As for the power supply comments NASA is often called into receptions where NASA personnel are thanked and praised for producing machines that have gone above and beyond all expectations of performance. Voyager was mostly a bargain basement deal for taxpayers. It was only intended to reach Saturn but went on to provide heaps of free data and images of the outer planets. The Mars Rover is still working, breaking all expectations of performance and again providing tax payers with bargain basement deal costs for the mission. As American taxpayers will tell you, even when you are rich, getting a freebie that sensational always gives you a buzz.
