Do guns protect you, or simply cause violence? It describes quite clearly why we were not satisfied with the abuses of the English Royalty system. Because of our fight for true freedom, we recognize the value of having weapons to establish, maintain & ensure freedom, for self defense/protection, & for a deterrence against evil people who would do us harm, & for hunting & sporting purposes of all kinds. You want to be powerless when you encounter a force greater than you can handle without a gun occurs? If yes, then you have the freedom to be victimized--the rest of us want all the advantages that we can have to prevent bad things from happening while the police are on their way to help & write incident reports. (Edited by zeffur) kittybobo34: Zeff,, The thing is humans are totally bad at determining the laws of chance. The odds of having your government after you vs the odds of a crazy person with a gun coming after you. Which do you think is more likely. When our constitution was established the odds were pretty high that danger was coming from all directions, both animal and human, Indian and foreign army. Even in the wild west they limited guns in the cities. They knew which was the most likely danger, and it wasn't the government. zeffur: re: "The odds of having your government after you vs the odds of a crazy person with a gun coming after you. Which do you think is more likely. " Doesn't matter. I need & want a weapon for either situation IF it should occur. Thankfully our founding fathers were sensible enough to understand the instabilities of govts & that people should have the right to rise up & shut them down if/when they get out of line. The police offer the notion that they 'serve & protect'--but, in reality we all know they are rarely ever able to get there in time to protect people from bad people (rapists, muggers, psychos, etc) who mean them harm/death/loss. People should have the right to defend themselves & their property. As for unfortunate gun-related incidents (accidents, mass shootings, etc)--that's just one of the costs of safety & freedom. No one will take away your car just because lots of people get injured or die each year due to cars. People need to be more vigilant in reporting psychos & police need to be more proactive in legally dispossessing unstable people (psychos) of weapons--that is the best solution to mass shooters--not taking protection devices from or making it impossible for law abiding citizens to acquire weapons to defend themselves. (Edited by zeffur) kittybobo34: In part I agree with your position, we really can't change much anyway as it is written in the constitution "the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed", But,,, we can do more to make sure that only the good guys that have training are the ones with the guns. zeffur: re: "But,,, we can do more to make sure that only the good guys that have training are the ones with the guns." OMG... do you think criminals don't have the $ to obtain guns in whatever fantasy situation you think you can create by only allowing the authorities to have weapons?? People need to be able to defend themselves against THOSE authorities if/when they beoming tyrannical in their misconduct and against THOSE bad people who WILL be able to get weapons--even if they have to pay someone to make them for them. They don't care about gun laws. You're living in a fantasy bubble--there is NO scenario in which people at large can't have guns & remain free & safe--eventually bad people will gain control & oppress good people--history is replete with examples of that occurring. (Edited by zeffur) The flying Squirrel: Apparently Trump of all people , Approved a Hotline people can ring up , And report people Tey susspect as Unstable with Guns , They came and take them , And your got to go to court to get them back , Not shore what States , Donno How that fits into freedom kittybobo34: You seem to have a handicap in reading. Good guys = any citizen in good standing, not authorities only. zeffur: The 'good guys' is often an expression used to describe good authorities vs bad people (including bad/corrupt authorities & others) or people like super heroes who come in to save the day against evil forces. You should be more clear in your articulations as some people in the gun debate think only the police should have the right to possess weapons. (Edited by zeffur) The flying Squirrel: Zeffer I know we do learn about other Countries. My point was they Rebelled for the same reasons. Burnt down the British barracks stole all the rum and rifles and waited for the British to come . But they didn't fight them off . The Leaders of the Rebllion went back to England for trial . But Instead of being Hung they went fair enough chaps thats a raw deal . And let them start there own colony forget the whole story. Seeing as tho it always turns into for fathers heroes of history freedom. We don't do that So America isn't so unique The flying Squirrel: Blah blah guns victimized Im not worried about being raped . Violence breeds Violence all there is to it The flying Squirrel: Why arnt you fighting off your Government alrady then . There stripped you of most your rights lgs1013: The simple fact is that the genius of the United States Constitution is that the ultimate power, regardless of what is fashionable or politically correct, lies with the People. No doubt that many have died as a result of gun ownership. What is NOT as easily measurable is how many deaths would result if the people had no ability to stand in defense of freedom against a tyrannical government. To measure that? You must find historical periods when the right of gun ownership has been taken away by governments composed of 'bad guys'. And those numbers? are in the hundreds of thousands, and in one case, 6 million.
